Birth: 1766 Chester County South Carolina, USA Death: Oct. 6, 1853 Hohenwald Lewis County Tennessee, USA George moved with his 2 infant sons John & George, to Lewis County, TN from Adair Co., KY, in 1814. His wife's name was Margarett (Marg) Clark. They married October 15, 1794, in Lincoln, KY. As a young man, residing in Kentucky (before moving to TN), George served in the War of 1812 - engaged in the Battle of the Thames, in Ontario, Canada. His Company was led by Cpt. James Tyler & Kentucky Governor Isaac Shelby. In Tennessee, the family first settled in Savannah, but moved east because of a yellow fever outbreak. Apparently, their was not time to build a cabin before winter. In 1810, in what became Lewis County, they made shelter in a large hollow tree. Their has been an old, funny story that has been passed down the generations that one day George Sr was caught out in a sudden downpour of rain on his property, and quickly came upon a hollowed out tree, to seek shelter, but in doing so, he startled a TN black bear - already seeking shelter there. Was said he never knew who was frightened more, him or the bear! It is said George's six children were the following: Samuel & James-born 1804 (we have no information at all about these two sons), John, Virginia Ann (married Samuel Sanford), George Jr and Hannah. George has hundreds of descendants, some still in Lewis Co, who still own this family cemetery and its adjoining land on both sides of the graveyard and Trace Crk Hwy, which runs north, from TN Hwy. 48, located west of Hohenwald, TN. Many of his descendants live in TX. This George was the first gen. of Turnbows (of several following him there)to be buried in this family cemetery. His burial there marked the beginning of this family cemetery. However, his exact burial site remains unknown; though all of our family, from our very origins there, maintain he is indeed buried there. Some of his descendants would eventually move to TX in the 1920s, where many remain to date. George Sr. was the first Turnbow to acquire the surrounding countryside-landtracts from TN Gov Trousdale, all of which is still owned by his Lewis Co., descendants to date, in 2011. It should be noted we have recently found an unofficial record of George Turnbo and a wife he previously married - Susannah Coffman in 1789 (before marrying our known ancestor - his last wife Margaret Clark), having a son: Hugh, born in 1793, in Lincoln Co., KY, and died March, 1866, in Wayne Co., TN. George Sr's father John spelled his name: Turnbough. John's son George Sr. dropped the: "ugh" ending. George Jr would spell it Turnbow, and this has carried ever since! George Sr's father was John Turnbough, and he was the first of all the Turnbow family to migrate to America (into the British Colony of South Carolina). Here, John would serve in the SC Militia, as a horseman in the Revolutionary War. He would live to be the oldest known of the Turnbows to date, age 106, passing away near the Forked Deer River, northeast of Memphis, Tennessee. It is believed he was born in France, in 1740, under the spelling: T-u-r-n-b-e-a-u, near the Alsace-Lorraine region. Family links: Parents: John Turnbough (1740 - 1846) Spouse: Margarett Clark Turnbo (1772 - 1809)* Children: John Turnbo (1805 - 1864)* George Turnbow (1809 - 1863)* Tennessee Jennie Branch Turnbow (1824 - 1907)* Sibling: Isaac Peyton Turnbow (1763 - 1829)* George Turnbo (1766 - 1853) *Calculated relationship Note: We believe it is very possible that George also had 3 other sons: Alexander, Nathaniel & Hugh all settling their families in neighboring Wayne county. Burial: Turnbow Cemetery Lewis County Tennessee, USA Plot: the first/Oldest, unmarked stone Created by: Steven Turnbow Record added: May 30, 2008 Find A Grave Memorial# 27197230
