Notes for this person

Birth: 1809 Adair County Kentucky, USA Death: Mar. 14, 1863 Terry Hinds County Mississippi, USA George Turnbow, Jr., served in the 3rd Tenn Infantry, Co C. His Confederate service record researched at the National Archives in Washington, shows George served at the Battle of Ft. Donelson, TN., came down with the measles & was among the many captured by Gen. Grant's forces. He was moved to Camp Douglas, Union Prison Hospital near Chicago & later transferred to Vicksburg, but died in route, near Terry, Miss. According to Arthur Turnbow, George had also served at the Battle of Shiloh. In 1994, his youngest great-great-grandson: Steven Turnbow of TX, with the help of his Texas Congressman (who Steven had the honor of serving during his Congressional Internship in Washington DC, in 1987), and his local TN cousin: Tony Turnbow (George's 3rd great-grandson), had George Turnbow's Confederate memorial stone placed here. The story has been passed down that when the Rebels came to take George's sons John & Dillahunt, into active duty with them, George sent his wife Nancy Scott Turnbow with them, to hide them down in the family root cellar and George went with the Rebels in their place. George Jr. was 52 at the time. His son Eason also served in the Confederacy. George Jr. had been carrying on the family tradition/business of farming & timber harvesting in Lewis Co., TN, up until the Civil War. Joseph Turnbow served as administrator of George Jr's Will. His property was sold at his residence on Sept. 23, 1865. His wife Nancy bought most of it. The land was sold, but their oldest son Josiah redeemed it and gave it to his mother, who then divided it among the children. Josiah was also known as Joseph. His nick-name was Sir Peter. George & Nancy had eight children. Most of their children, especially Dillahunt's sons & Josiah's sons - John & James Turnbow's children, as well as Mary Turnbow Fraley's son William - all later moved to Texas at different times. Josiah and Dillahunt's descendents live in TX, LA & CA. George & Nancy's daughter: Margaret J. Turnbow Roden's- daughter Pink, married John Tharp of Lewis County. Many of Eason's descendents still live in this local area, as well as other parts of TN. Mary Turnbow Fraley's descendents live near the Longview, TX area. Most of Eason Turnbow's descendents, as well as John Turnbow's descendents, (John, born 1805, the brother of George Turnbow, Jr), all still reside here in Lewis County, TN. Most of Josiah Turnbow's descendents now live in Texas. George & Nancy's daughter - Nancy Turnbow Rogers descendents remained in TN. George & Nancy's son Louis Andrew Turnbow, was lost in action in the Civil War. As for the future of our Turnbow name, Dillahunt has 3 Turnbow-great-grandsons and 4 young, Turnbow-great-great grandsons all living in the Ft. Worth, TX area; as well as a few other great-great-grandsons in north TX, living as of 2013. Harv Turnbow has 2 young, great-grandsons living in the Chattanooga-north Georgia area. A special note of thanks to our cousin Craig Turnbow, for continuing to maintain our family cemetery for over 20 years now, and for clearing the brush from the highway, all the way down to the cemetery, and building a road to it; so that all of our family can drive down to the cemetery now, rather than having to scale down the hillside on foot, as we all had to do before the road was created by him in the early 1990s.
