JOHN MCILVANE succeeded his father, Patrick, as Laird of Grimmetin1613.Bymarrying Jane Anne Corry (also spelled Corrie), he brought ThomastonCastle andestateintothe family.

Thomas Corry de Kelwood, had a charter from James IV dated12,January1507,for the lands of Thomaston and several others. He hadacharterfrom James Vin 1517 for the lands of Newly and Clonlothry.ThomasCorry, along withDavid Crawford of Keirs, was fined 100 poundsfornotentering Bargany forthe slaughter of the young Laird ofAttiquinin1512. The lands of Thomastonpassed eventually to GeorgeCorryofKelwood, who was served heir to hisfather, John, on 30 March,1610.InGeorge's will, it states that his sonhaving died, his daughterAnnwasheiress. The heads of the family retainedthe title of LairdofGrimmetbut always thereafter lived at Thomaston.

Anne Cony Mcllvane died in 1632 and in her willshenamesdaughters'Margaret, Agnes, Helein and Mareonne Mcllvane,Bairneslawfullto yedefunct.' Margaret married Sir Alexander Kennedy, EarlofCulzean,whosefather was Gilbert Kennedy, Earl of Cassilis. TheyhadadaughterMargaret Kennedy who married David Kennedy, EarlofCassillis.Agnesmarried Morris Morrison, and Marion married GilbertEdgar.Therewerealso at least two sons David (who may have predeceasedhisfather),andJohn, who succeeded his father.

While the Kennedy feud ostensibly ended with the death ofLairdofBarganyin 1601 at Lady Cross, afterwards the violence oftheperiodcontinuedsporadically. The Mcllvanes did not completelyavoidtheconflicts, beingdrawn into them by friends and relatives.JohnMcllvaneof Grimmet waswitness to caution of Patrick CampbellSeotember12,1607and, In 1613,John, Earl of Cassilis complained againstJohnMcllveaneand others forriot in tile Baillery of Carrick-

'In November last, Jolm Kennedy of Blairquhan on the onepartandJohnneMcIlvalle of the other part of Grinunet, having raised atumultinthetown of Maybole, the said Earl, as one of the membersofHisMajesty'scounsel. ..had attempted to pacify the same and hadorderedtheriotersto disperse. The said Jolm Kennedy had obeyed mostwillingly,butGeorgeCorry of Kelwood and David Corry , his brother hadgone tothesaidJohnne McIlvane and With the aid of 11 persons...withswords,...hadattacked the Earl and his servants, and had driventhem totheirlodging,had compelled the said Earl to barricadethemselves.Moreover thesaidJohnne McIlvane and George and David Corry hadproudlyrefused toobeythe Earl's order that they should enter themselvesin wardinIvlayboleTolbooth til they had found caution; and the saidGeorgeCorryhadproudly and avowedlie carried the said Johnne McIlvaneandhissaidbrother away with him from the Earl's billie-deputy.ThesaidJohnneMcllvean being present the Lords find the defendershavebeenguilty of avery great insolence and misbehavioure ..and committhesaidJohnneMcIlveane to the Tolbooth of Edinbllfgll, there to remainathisownexpense till further order...They refuse the charge againstthesaidJolmMcilvane for refusing to find caution, as the said Jolmhasproducedanact of Court of the Bailery of Carrick showing that tllesaidJolmandGeorge Corrie of Kelwood as cautioner had actedthemselvesforJolmKennedy of Blairquhon and his household for 1,000merks.O1613,Regular CouncilofDecreta.

30 Mar 1610 In George Corry's will it states that his sonhavingdied,hisdaughter Ann was heiress. The heads of the family retainedthetitleofLaird of Grimmet but always thereafter lived at Thomaston.
