Kennedy comes from the flattering Gaelic word cinneidigh,whichinancientIreland meant 'ugly headed'. Crossing the Irish Sea tosettleinan areaof Dalriada now called Carrick in Ayrshire, they wereprobably led by Gilbert, whose son Duncan became the 1st Earl of Carrickinthe11thcentury.

This name comes from the old Irish Gaelic,'cinneidigh',literallymeaning'ugly headed'. The family came from Irelandto CelticDalriada,nowStrathclyde, but are mainly associated with thedistrict ofCarrickinAyrshire. They claimed descent from the Earls ofCarrick andkinshiptothe Bruce family, whom they supported against theComynsandthroughoutthe War of Independence.

John Kennedy of Dunure acquired lands at Cassillis about1360,andwitnesseda charter by Robert II in 1384. His son, Sir Gilbert,wasoneof thehostages for the release of David II by the Englishin1357.Gilbert's son,James, married Princess Mary, second daughterofRobertIII. Their son,another Gilbert, was created Lord Kennedy inabout1457and was one of thesix regents during the minority of JamesIII.Abrother of the first LordKennedy, James Kennedy, was oneofScotland'sbest-Ioved bishops. He servedbriefly as High ChancellorofScotland andwas Bishop of Dunkeld, and laterArchbishop of St.Andrews.At St.Andrews he founded St. Salvator's Collegein 1455.

Hugh Kennedy of Ardstinchar served as commander ofthescotsmercenarytroops who fought for Joan of Arc at the siege ofOrleans;henceJoanfigures on the arms of Kennedy of Bargany. Sir David,thirdLordKennedy, was created Earl of Cassillis in 1509 and died atFloddenin1513. Thesecond Earl was murdered in 1527. Gilbert, third Earl,wasoneof fourScottish commissioners who were poisoned at Dieppe ontheirreturnfromthe marriage of Mary , Queen of Scots to the Dauphin in1558.Hehadinherited his title at the age of twelve when one of hisfirstactswasto sign, under duress, the death warrant of PatrickHamilton,thefirstScottish Protestant martyr. The fourth Earl earnedaninfamousreputationby 'roasting' Alan Stewart, Abbot of Crossraguel,inthe blackvault ofDunmore in order to obtain tracts of abbey land.

The sixth Earl of Cassillis, John, was Lord Justice GeneralofScotlandfrom1649 to 1651. He was a zealous Protestant, as was hisson,theseventh Earl,and both were firm supporters of Parliamentduringthecivil war. TheJustice General sat in Cromwell's House ofLords.Theysuffered for theirbeliefs, but their estates remainedlargelyintact.When the eighth Earldied without heirs their was athree-yearcourtdispute to determine thesuccession. The House of Lordsfinallyfound infavour of Sir Thomas Kennedyof Culzean in preference toWilliam,Earl ofMarch and London. Sir Thomas'sbrother, David, anadvocate,succeeded himin 1775 as tenth Earl, and was anactive improver.Hecommissioned thearchitect Robert Adam to build thecastle atCulzean,considered to beAdam's masterpiece.
