JOHN MCILVANE succeeded his father John about 1637. This isthesameJohnmentioned in 1613 as Johnne Mcllvane, Younger of Grummettinacomplaintagainst John Kennedy 'In November last while reposinghimselfinsobermanner within the Kaitchepoole of Maybole, he wasthereattackedandshamefully treated by Johnne Kennedy of Blairquhan andotherswithdrawnsword in ane hand and a battoun in the uther he wouldhaveslainhispursuer had he not escaped by the providence of God andhisawnebettirdefence.O
The Glasgow Commissariat August 20, 1643 mentions JulianaSchaw,spouseofJohn Mcllvane of Grimmet. Her will names daughtersAnneandJulianeMcllvane. Juliane married Rev. Andrew Rodgers,MinisterinGastoun.Unlike England, where, upon marriage, the woman'spropertyandwealthbecame the husband's, Scotland's law was very favorabletowomen.Customalso gave them equal rights to property and to headfamilies.
The children of John and Juliana McIlvane were QuentinMcIlvane,wholivedat Thomaston, heir and successor as Laird ofGrinunet;AlexanderMcIlvane,who married a Miss McAdam and lived atAughnacloy,Ireland;John McIlvane,who inherited Grinunet and married AnneCwmingham;andGilbert who movedto County Antrim Ireland. GilbertMcilvanewhosetestament was datedAugust II, 1668, in the Parish ofMaybole. His spouse was Janet Schaw, whosetestamentwasdated July 27,1676. This Gilbert is believed to have beentheancestorof the GilbertMcIlvane whose son William resided inBaltimore,Maryland,and had two sons,William and Gilbert. The latter'sson,WilliamMcIlvain, married December12th 1775, Mary McIlvain, hisfirstcousin,daughter of John McIlvain.
John Mcllvane died in 1669, his will being datedSeptember21,1669.Quentin,who inherited Thomaston, served heir to hisfatherOctober 8,1669. Hisbrother John apparently inherited Grimet at thesametime.
Laird of Grimmet 1637-1669 Some list Jane Ann Corry as his first wife.
