Robert Sandfort writes: By the time of the next available record, dated 1534, Rathert ton santvorde was no longer living. This was aperiod of religious conflict in Europe generally. Martin Luther hadnailed his 95 these to the Wittenberg Church door in 1517, and the period of religious divisiveness had begun. Before this period would end over 100 years later, all of Europe would elect Protestantism or Catholicism by regional agreement. The peasants usuallended up (essentially by degree) adhering to the faith chosen by their nobleman or other higher ruling authority.
In addition to the religious conflicts rampent in the land, the Turks were mounting increasingly strong invasion attempts from the East and South. The Holy Roman Emperor and ruler of Germany levied aTurk Tax to be raised begining in 1532. For the parish district of Badbergen, the lists from 1534 exist.
From the fact that Johan von Zantvorde and his wife, Gerte, were taxed on mark apiece, it is known that he is the owner of the Sandfort farm at that time. On the other hand, Lampe von Zantvorde was taxed only eight shillings which indicates he was a tenant farmer. From this it can be concluded that Johan and Lampe were probably brothers, both sons of Ratert. Since Johan was in possession of the farm, he was likely the younger of the two, since at this time the youngest son inherits.
