John Webb was born in Virginia in 1783 (possibly the area which is now Kentucky, as Kentucky was not yet a state and considered a part of Virginia). By August of 1816 we know John was of Jefferson Co, KY when he married Elizabeth "Betsy" Mayfield, daughter of Elijah Mayfield. By 1820, John had moved his family to Hickman Co, TN where on June 10, 1821 he received a land grant "to John Webb, assignee of Robert Walker Jr." , 30 acres in the 8th District of Hickman Co, TN on Indian Creek, a branch of Big Swan Creek in Range 5, Section 5. In 1841, John had 134 acres surveyed in Hickman Co, TN on Big Swan Creek, Range 5, Section 5 near the stake in Indian Creek. This land was later located in Lewis Co, TN which was formed in 1843 from part of Hickman Co. John and his family were members of the Ebenezer Methodist Church which was formed near Old Palestine by Rev. James Tarrant. John and his family were found in the Lewis Co, TN census in 1850. On May 15, 1852, John sold his land of 176 acres in Lewis Co. to James McKeel (registered 27 Apr 1854) and moved to Effingham Co, IL where he made his first land purchase in 1853. He was listed in the 1860 Census there aged 75 years, but died on July 1st of the same year. His tombstone says he died July 1, 1860 age 76 years, 6 months, and 9 days (therefore born 22 Dec 1783).
