His birth record in Sangamon County indicates his given name was George Washington Lorenz, and he was born in Springfield, not Woodside Township. Certificate #3602. On the 1910 census he is living in Toledo Twp. in Chase County, Kansas. He is a farmer. His wife, Minnie, was 25, they had been married 6 years, they had only 1 child - Mable M. - who was 5. They also had a hired man named Ray ????. A couple of houses away lived Minnie's parents and some of her siblings. Her father, Henry, was a farmer and born in Germany. He was 36. Her mother, Ella, was 36 and born in Illinois. They had 9 children, and 8 were living. On the 1920 census he is still living in Chase County, Kansas, and is still a farmer. The 1960 city directory in Kansas for he and Minnie says: Lawrence Geo E (Minnie E) real est R205 Ropfagel bldg h1309 Merchant. At the time of his brother, Frederick's, death, he was living in Saffordsville, Kansas. Obituary: George E. Lawrence, 1309 Merchant St., a retired farmer and realtor, died Friday night in his home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. Mr. Lawrence, the son of Christopher and Anna Harms, Lawrence, was born June 27th, 1882, in Springfield, Ill., and he was married to Minnie ImMasche on Aug. 5th, 1903, in Saffordville. He had been a resident of Chase County before he moved to Emporia in 1945. Mr. Lawrence was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and two sisters and he is survived by his wife, of the home; one daughter, Mrs. C. H. (Mabel) Stout, 615 Elm St.; two granddaughters, Mrs. John (Sarah) Scahill, Berkeley, Calif., and Mrs. Steven (Martha) Hessler, New York, N. Y., and two great-grandchildren. Lawrence, who died Friday in his home, 1309 Merchant St., will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel. They will be conducted by the Rev. Judd Henry Jones, pastor of the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery, Toledo. (Published Emporia Gazette, February 8, 1971, page 6, column 3) Obituary: Funeral services for George E. Lawrence, who died Friday in his home, 1309 Merchant St., were held Tuesday afternoon in Roberts-Blue-Barnett Chapel. They were conduected by the Rev. Judd Henry Jones, pastor of the First United Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Grover Piper sang, accompanied by Mrs. Robert Plummer, and Fred Zumbrunn, Ivan Harder, Edward E. McAntee, V. L. ImMasche, Merlyn D. Lyon and Russell Cooper served as pallbearers. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery, Toldeo. Out-of-town relatives among those who attended were Sarah Scahill, Berkeley, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. H. R. ImMasche, Strong City. (Published Wednesday, February 10, 1971)
