Edith - Margaret (Matilda) of Scotland, born in 1080 anddiedin1118,married Henry I. Beauclerc, King of England, son ofWilliamITheConqueror (ruler from 1066 to 1087) and his wife,MatildaofFlanders,who died in 1083. Matilda was educated at WiltonandRomseyAbbey whereshe said that her aunt, Christina, forced her to wearablackveil. Shethrew it on the ground whenever left alone, inspiteofbeatings. Whenher mother died she came to England to EdgarAtheling,heruncle. She wasa sister of King David of Scotland; she wasacorrespondentof Anselm andHildebert, Bishop of Le Mans, who wrotepoetryabout her.She was asymbol of the union of Saxon and Norman. ShewasHenry's Queenforseventeen years and six months, and died in herprimelike most ofherfamily. Henry and Matilda had a son and a daughterasfollows:
