By his marriage to Maud/Matilda ofAngus(theScottishKing's second Cousin) his son Gilbert inherited theEarldomofAngus.Gilbert may have been using the title of Earl between 1243and1245so Ihave included him in this section. Manor lands atOtterburnarementionedin Gilbert's will amongst the list of his property.Thismayindicatethat he was the owner if not the builder of Otterburntower.TheHamiltonfamily trace their ancestry back to Gilbert throughashadowyfigureknown as Gilbert De Beaumont alias De Hamildon (OrGilbertDeHamildun)claiming him as a son of Gilbert and his firstwifeTheophania.Duringthe Scottish wars of independance many records werelostso itisdifficult to trace people from these times. Thingsarealsocomplicatedby the customs of referring to nobles by eithertheirsurnameOR theirlandholding. It does seem odd that Gilbert shouldname twoof hissonsGilbert even if they do have different mothers althoughitisnotuncommon for two sons to have the same name if one diedasaninfant,Robert, the 2nd Earl, did this.
