Birth: Jun. 3, 1905 Kansas City Jackson County Missouri, USA Death: Mar. 26, 1975 Manteca San Joaquin County California, USA Edna Lenore Challis was the first born of Ford Foster Challis and Florence Halterman Hiatt and was named after her aunt Edna Lenore Challis. Edna was raised in Topeka Kansas with her parents and siblings Ford Foster "Bud" Challis Jr., Virginia Lucille Challis and Juanita Challis. Edna was always very close to her siblings. Edna's father died when she was 13 and she always felt bad about it since it was her that brought home the Spanish Flu from school. As a young adult she found her soul mate, Walter Monroe Kleinsteuber. They dated for awhile and decided to get married. Instead of having a traditional marriage the decided to elope. They planned to go to Kansas City, Kansas for a day with Edna's cousin Paul Halterman and his wife Ann. Once there the two of them went to a minister they knew but their marrriage license was Kansas City, Missouri so the minister took them to a minister he knew there. Although it was that minister's wedding anniversary and Easter Sunday he married them. That night they went home to their own houses and told no one until one night when Walter was visiting Edna, at her home, and momma Florence told him he couldn't take Edna out that night to the basketball game. Walter promptly told her, "Yes I can she is my wife!" Walter and Edna had two children Walter Monroe Kleinsteuber Jr. and JoAnn Carol Kleinsteuber. After Walter graduated as an engineer he got a job as an engineer and supervisor at an ice cream plant in Minneapolis Minnesota. Tragedy hit Edna early as a young mother. While on a trip fishing, Walter Sr and Wally Jr's boat capsized and they both drown in the cold May waters of Fowl lake. Edna and JoAnn perservered and made ends meet. Edna wanting to get out of the cold winters of Minneapolis and deciding to be closer to family they decided to move to Bakersfield California where her brother Bud and mother lived. Edna found work but when the company found out that she was over 45 they decided not to hire Edna. While visiting friends in San Diego, California JoAnn found a job. They both liked San Diego better than Bakersfield so they moved to San Diego. Eventually after JoAnn moved to Northern California they convinced Edna to move to Manteca, California to be closer to Edna's mother Florence and sister Juanita who lived there in Manteca. Edna is lovingly remember by those who knew her. She was very hard working and giving. We love and miss her!
