[Bill's Nutt.FTW] In her book, Polly admits to problems in their marriage. On page 186 she mentions that she went to New York and found a job as a housekeeper-factotum to Elmer Rice, a Pulitzer prize-winning playwright whose work she knew and admired and who lived in New York. She stayed for 18 months and was happy, then returned to her husband and the ranch. She remodeled and set up the home they lived in when they first got married to rent it to hunters who were beginning to invade Nebraska and who were accustomed to harsh surroundings, actually expected, in such remote places. Page 201: "For six years my guests came to Richardson Hereford Ranch. I worked hard, my mind seething with plans, I paid off all the bills and some of the loans, and I made part of the Big Dream come true. And, when I saw that the dream was as far away as ever, I chucked it all and went to live in Los Angeles, where I paid off the last $2,500.00 loan with money I earned working as a cook-housekeeper." She goes on in the remainder of the book to outline all she did in California, struggling to earn a living, mostly very successfully. She was excellent with short-hand, typing, organizing and running the homes of some famous people. In the Afterword, Karl Spence Richardson states: "After finishing her memoir, my mother continued working in Los Angeles, living in the heart of downtown L. A. Polly loved big cities as much as she loved the buttes and vistas of northwestern Nebraska. "In 1996 my mother underwent a medical episode -- never satisfactorily diagnosed -- which left her mentally unimpaired but unable to take care of herself. Given my mothers' strong preference for living alone, I was surprised when she agreed to move back to Nebraska, to the Ponderosa Villa, an assisted living facility inCrawford, where she would have a roommate. (He says it was a successful move and she was happy.) "...After living at the Ponderosa for almost exactly one year, my mother died on May 1, 1998, shortly after her 84th birthday." Upon her death, Polly's body was cremated and the ashes scattered over the Richardson Ranch in Nebraska. Email from Brian James McBride, Aug 12, 2003: "I just got back from a visit with Tom Spence in Crawford, NE. ...I did find that she (Polly) had rmarried before her death, Willis B. Lane, he died about 1944, she remained in Texas and was returned to Bladen for burial with Charles and Minnie. Also discovered the missing son was Raymond, lived only 24 days, he and Katie are buried in Dexter, MO."
