Irish descent. Moved to Franklin County, Nebraska. His dad moved the family to Nebraska when Karl was age 9 (page 55). Polly Spence in her book states: "Karl Spence fell in love with Sadie Doher at once, and he courted her furiously. Since the age of fourteen, he's been the editor, publisher, and printer of the "Upland Eagle." His uncle Ernest Spence had taught him the printer's trade..." "They were married in February 1908, three weeks after Karls' nineteenth birthday and two days before Sadie's twentieth." See source, page 13. "In 1929, when I was 15, Dad sold the little weekly newspaper and moved us to Crawford, a town about two hundred miles northwest of Franklin, near the Wyoming and South Dakota borders." Page 137, Polly says: "My grandmother came from Arkansas after Dad died (1938). She and I sat on the side porch together, and she told me, as she had before, what a funny, loving, absurd little boy Dad had been. His brother Fred was a year and a half older, and the two were inseparable." Page 140: "Dad had been absorbed in archeology and history for as long as I could remember, not superficially as a dilettante but as a devoted amateur."
