[edwards.FTW] [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #0888, Date of Import: 6 May 2002] Family Tree Maker version 2.0 -- Readme December, 1991 This document covers topics that were added after the manual was printed: * Importing Roots III files * Printing a specific list of individuals * Using Family Tree Maker with Microsoft Windows 3.0 * Styles of descendant trees * Using a Packard Bell mouse IMPORTING ROOTS III FILES Family Tree Maker 2.0 can automatically import a Roots III file and convert it to a Family Tree Maker card file. You can import names, birth dates and locations, death dates and locations, marriage dates and locations, sex, and birth status. Once you have this information in Family Tree Maker, you can print trees that are not possible in Roots III. To import your Roots III file into Family Tree Maker: 1. If necessary, save your card file. The Roots file you import will completely replace the current card file. 2. From any Family Card, press F9 to display the Command Menu. 3. Choose F - File. 4. Choose U - Utilities. 5. Choose R - Get Roots III file. 6. Select your Roots III file and press Enter. Your Roots III file is now imported into Family Tree Maker and is ready for printing. Note: If you've used an underscore between names in Roots III, they will not appear in your Family Tree Maker card file. DO NOT type them back in. They will appear in your printed trees and the trees won't look as nice. Important Note about Importing from Roots III: Family Tree Maker allows longer words in a name or location, but Roots III has longer fields than Family Tree Maker. If a field (the name field, for example) contains more than 48 characters of information, Family Tree Maker will import only the first 48 characters. When this happens, all of that individual's information will also be placed into their Individual Card 4 - Notes. This way, you can decide which piece of the information is most important to you, and which piece you want to drop. Or you may decide to abbreviate something so it all fits. To search for all individuals whose information was truncated: 1. From any Family Card, press F7 to Find an individual. Family Tree Maker now displays the "Find Individual" screen. 2. Press F5 to change the item to search. 3. Highlight "Notes" and press Enter. (You'll need to press PgDn several times to get to "Notes.") 4. Type "Roots III" and press Enter. 5. Family Tree Maker now displays the Family Card of the first person whose information was truncated. If you like, you can edit this Family Card. You can continue your search by pressing F7 twice. Note: See "Find individual command" in the index of your user's guide for further assistance using the Find individual command. PRINTING A SPECIFIC LIST OF INDIVIDUALS You can print a specific list of individuals (instead of all the names in your card file) by using the Find individual command to narrow down the list. For example, you can print just the people born after 1900, or only those with the last name "Hess". To print a specific list of individuals: 1. From any Family Card, press F9 to display the Command Menu. 2. Choose L - Print list. 3. Choose L - List of individuals. Family Tree Maker now displays the "List of Individuals" screen. 4. Press Ctrl+F10. Family Tree Maker now asks you which name you'd like to search for. Either type a name, or search using a different field. You can search using dates, events, comments, or even phrases in Individual Card 4 - Notes. Press F5 if you wish to search using a different field (see "Find individual command" in the index of your user's guide for further assistance). Even though you can search using any field, this example will continue using the name field for simplicity. 5. Type a name. Generally, the less you type the better, because you'll find more people and you're less likely to make typos. For example, type "Br" instead of "Brickman". Family Tree Maker now shows you a preview of your list on the screen. If it's not what you want, you can press Esc and change things before wasting paper. 6. Press F10 to begin printing. USING FAMILY TREE MAKER WITH MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.0 Although Family Tree Maker is not a Windows application, it can run as a DOS application under Windows 3.0. For your convenience, there is a Windows icon and PIF file included with the Family Tree Maker program. To use the Family Tree Maker icon that we have provided, start Microsoft Windows, and open the Program Manager window. Click on the current Family Tree Maker program icon, and select Properties from the File menu. Click Change icon, and select the icon file "FTM.ICO" This icon file will be in the same subdirectory as the Family Tree Maker program files. The PIF file we've included is called "FTM.PIF" and it is also located in the same subdirectory as the Family Tree Maker program files. The FTM.PIF file has been set up to start Family Tree Maker from a subdirectory called "FTM" on the C: drive. If you installed Family Tree Maker in a place other than C:\FTM, you will need to modify the PIF file. To do this, start Microsoft Windows and open the Program Manager window. Double-click the PIF Editor (usually located in the Accessories group), and open FTM.PIF. Then change the Start-up directory to reflect your specific system. Once the PIF file is set up correctly, modify the Command line in the Program Item Properties for Family Tree Maker. Have it run the FTM.PIF file instead of the FTM.EXE file. See your Windows user's guide for further explanation. Note: You do not have to use our PIF file to run Family Tree Maker under Windows. You can use the default PIF file that comes with Windows. See your Windows user's guide. Important note to Windows users: It is extremely important that you only have one copy of Family Tree Maker running at a time. Although Windows is capable of running Family Tree Maker more than once simultaneously, you should not do this. If you were to do this, your card file would get damaged and you could lose your family information. Please only have one copy of Family Tree Maker running at once. STYLES OF DESCENDANT TREES Because descendant trees can get very wide, Family Tree Maker gives you several options for printing them. From the screen "Descendant Tree - Step 3 of 4," choose "F6 - Change other print settings." There are four Descendant tree styles: Style 1 (widest) draws your whole tree in a horizontal format, putting every person into a box. Style 2 draws the most recent generation in each branch in a vertical format, putting every person into a box. Style 3 draws the second most recent generation in each branch in a vertical format. The most recent generation is printed without boxes; bloodline relatives (no spouses) are listed with their birth and death years only. Style 4 (narrowest) is the same as style 3 except it only prints the names (no dates) for the most recent generation. If you want to print everyone in your tree in boxes, and some of them are not, then change to either Style 1 or Style 2. PACKARD BELL MOUSE USERS If you use a Packard Bell mouse, and if you have any problems starting Family Tree Maker, do the following: 1. Instead of typing "FTM" to start Family Tree Maker, type "FTM -M" This will allow you to use Family Tree Maker, but without your mouse. 2. Call Packard Bell Technical Support at 800-733-4433. The problem you're having can be solved if you get a new version of their mouse driver. Ask them for their latest MICROSOFT mouse driver. After installing it, you'll be able to use Family Tree Maker with your Packard Bell mouse. PRINTING THIS README FILE To print this file on your printer: From the DOS prompt (usually C:>) type COPY README LPT1
