[edwards.FTW] [Brøderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree #0888, Date of Import: 6 May 2002] He came from North Carolina in 1811 with his parents and settled in Franklin County TN betweenWinchester and Tullahoma. Note: William Clarke Quantrill (1837-1865), guerrilla chieftain was an irregular Confederate, operating in Missouri, Kansas and Kentucky; dissention finally aroseamong his troopsand it broke up into smaller bands between October 1863 and January 1864. (ref. The Dictionary of American Biogrphy Volume XV 1935 pp 294-295). The circumstances leading to Byrom's death are of some interest, and have been handed down indifferent versions through the different descendents of the murdered man. Various accounts tell us that one of the bushwacker bands claiming Yankee sympathies was headed by one Benjamin Sherwood, a native of central Tennessee and a member of the Original Quantrill band who started operations and raiding parties in Central Tennessee. One night in 1864, Sherwood and his men rode up to the front gate of Mr Byrom's home, and calling him out to the gate demanded $3500 in five minutes. Now Byrom bought supplies for the Confederate Army, and had delivered a large consignment of meat to the Army, being paid in vouchers which he never brought to the house. He told the guerilla group that he didn.t have any money. They told him they knew he did and would shoot him down if he did not deliver it at once. To this he replied, "You will shoot me then for I haven't any." They immediately shot himand he fell dead at his own gate, then they rode away. Caldonia, the youngest child, and who had been very ill with diptheria or measles, hearing the shots, jumped out of bed an ran screaming out into thr yard, She relapsed and died four days later. No arrests were made. Most of the accounts agree on the above.account, But as to what happened later accounts vary. One reliable source says that about 1870 after the marriage of George S. Byrom (son of the murdered man) and while George Byrom was preparing for the ministry, his three brothers came to his home in Tullahoma and called him out and told him the man who killed their father had come back into the country and they wanted him to go with them and catch and kill the murderer. George said to them: "I must talk it over with Sallie, his wife, wht he had heard. She said in substance: "No, you must not go. The war is over. Your Father is dead, you can't bring him back. And to kill his murderer would get you all in trouble. You must not go." He accepted her view of the matter and declined to go with them. The other brothers left Tullahoma and went to Shelbyville but when they got there the murderer, being warned by Federal soldiers camping at Tullhoma, fled the country. They thereupon abandoned the enterprise, and the murderer was permitted to escape. Another version which is doubtful in origin, says thatafter the Civil War, the murdered man's three sons, William F., John A., and Henderson returned home and organized three bands of ex-Confederate soldiers of fifteen men each, cornered Sherwood in some swamps, where Henderson's band caught him and killed him under a tree.
