Jane Blankenship Boyd Brown, 73, died Thursday, June 2, 2016, in Wilmington, N.C., following a courageous battle with leukemia. Born in Va. to the late Clarence and Frances Sisk Blankenship, she was preceded in death by a brother, Warren; a sister, Eula, and husbands, Sidney Boyd, father of her children, and J. P. Brown. Jane earned her undergraduate degree from Virginia Intermont College and received graduate degrees from East Tennessee State University and Loyola University, New Orleans. A life-long advocate for the elimination of poverty and for criminal justice reform, she completed a 42 year career in public administration with the State of Virginia where she led multiple programs for children, adults and families. From 2010 through 2014, she served as Director for Community Partnerships, Office of the Governor, Commonwealth of Virginia. Jane was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church, Wrightsville Beach, where she was a member of the Outreach Committee and organized participation with Habitat for Humanity. She was also a member of the Governing Board of the NC Council of Churches. She was previously a parishioner of Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond, Va. where she served as Parish Ecumenical Representative. An active community volunteer, she was a Master Gardener at the New Hanover County Arboretum, a member of the Ability Garden Board, the Cape Fear Garden Club, the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society. In Virginia, she served on numerous boards and committees, including Stuart Circle Parish Ecumenical Council, Virginia Coalition for the Homeless, and Habitat for Humanity. In 1997, she was selected an Outstanding Richmonder for leadership provided in the successful community effort to overturn a city ordinance that prohibited churches from feeding the poor. In 2012, she received the Paul W. Keve Distinguished Service Award for her prisoner reentry work in Va. She is survived by daughters, Katherine Boyd of Reston, Va., and Stephanie Boyd Durner; son-in-law, John A. Durner IV (Jay); grandchildren, John and Sydney Durner of Wilmington, N.C. and an extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, June 16, 2016, 12 p.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 209 South Lumina Ave, Wrightsville Beach, N.C. A reception and visitation will follow at the Parish Hall. The family requests memorials be sent to Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty or to the Outreach Committee, St. Therese Catholic Church.
