In 1927 he was a student in Shipman, Illinois. His teacher was Mrs. Nell Gaspard. / Nell was born March 30, 1894. She began teaching in 1914, teaching 5 years in country schools, then 25 years in Shipman grade schools and the high school. She was also a unit librarian and went to Medora and Brighton. Her 1954-1955 school yeas was interrupted by her husband's illness, and she did not finish teaching that year. In 1960 she returned to teach in Brighton, being there until 1962. / She died in August, 1981. Sources - Edward's class photo/Donna Cottingham in the Southwestern school district in Piasa, Illinois/SSDI. Uncle Edward used to always watch for the trains, time them on h is watch and count the freight cars. Grandma's house (in Shipman or Plainview?) faced the train tracks but was torn down in about 2000. Children who lived in Plainview either hopped a train into Shipman or rode all the way to Carlinville or walked the tracks to school. Sometimes kids would hide in a compartment so they didn't have to pay the cost to ride the train. The train would stop in Shipman and the engineer would grab a bite to eat. The couple who shared this information remembers that Grandma was a widow and raised the 2 boys alone. Source - Web and Mary Kahl in Shipman, Illinois. Web was a classmate of Uncle Edward's. Uncle Edward's school records in Shipman cannot be located. Donna Cottingham says they have all the records back to 1900 though. In 1930 was a printing company errand boy. He lived with his mother at 2819 Shenandoah Avenue in St. Louis in 1939. He was a beltmaker for United Belt Manufacturing. Source - 1939 city directory. For many years he was employed at Rexall Drug Company in St. Louis, working on the docks until his retirement. Source - Me! Pauline Strahan Meyers, former Plainview neighbor, said Edward used to wind string all over the trees in his yard and pretend they were telegraph lines. He also used to deliver the evening paper in Plainview. Edward would pick up the papers from the depot and deliver them, reading the funnies using a flashlight as he went. Edward is remembered as being a very good student. When he would hear a train while in class, he would stand and stretch to see out the window. He would check his watch and write down the time and the engine number. Then he would count the cars. Edward was very well mannered and had a very dark complexion.
