Bernard Brockman
Greer

David Bernard Brockman, 89, entered into eternal life on January 10, 2005.

A native and lifelong resident of Greer, Mr. Brockman was the son of the late J.O. and Sallie Hammett Brockman and widower of Anna Collins Brockman.

He served in the United States Army 555th Automatic Weapons Battalion during World War II. His distinguished service included The Battle of Bastogne and the hard-fought victory in The Battle of The Bulge; one of the largest and bloodiest of World War II involving U.S. Forces. This winter of misery in the cold mountainous and dark forests of the Ardennes in Belgium enabled him to share a big part of history with students, family, and friends.

An 80-year-old member of Greer First Baptist Church, Bernard served as a deacon, was an active participant of the Barnabas Factor, and taught Sunday school for 67 years. Bernard retired as Greer Postmaster in 1976, becoming active with many hobbies and in service to his community. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion, was active in Kiwanis for 19 years, Chaplain of U.S. Postal Service of S.C. for 11 years, served Meals on Wheels for 20 years, and was a member of the American Camelia Society and Greenville Photographic Society.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Carl Lancaster, of Dalton, Ga., and Maria and Ron Ponder, of Lexington; three grandchildren, Zak Lancaster, of Seoul, South Korea, Erin Lancaster, of Athens, Ga., and Stephanie Ponder, of Anderson; three brothers, William Brockman, of Greenville, Oliver Brockman, of San Diego, Calif., and Jim Brockman, of Spartanburg; a sister, Carolyn Gibson, of Rock Hill; a brother and sister-in-law, Maurice and Jual Collins, of Campobello; and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his services on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at Greer First Baptist Church at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Bob Osborne, Bill Rogers, Rick Bright, Charlie Wilson, Jimmy Johnson, Wayne Brockman, and David Dean Craft.

Honorary escort will be Bernard Brockman Fellowship Class and the Barnabas Factor.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Private committal services will be held at Hillcrest Mausoleum.

Memorials may be made to Greer Community Ministries, P.O. Box 1373, Greer, S.C. 29652 or the Baptist International Relief Fund c/o Greer First Baptist Church, 202 W. Poinsett Street, Greer, S.C. 29650. -- The Wood Mortuary, Inc.
