Bernard (Von) Brockman was born in Westenholz, Westphalia, Germany, in 1803. His family belonged to the landed gentry, according to family tradition.
Westenholz, a town of about 1700 people at that time, lies 8 kilometers (5 miles) to the west of Delbrueck and about 24 kilometers (15 miles) west/northwest of Paderborn. Catholics of the area originally belonged to the parish in Delbrueck. A church (St. Joseph's) was built in Westenholz in 1715 and it became an independent parish in 1717, with parish books dating to 1718.
Katharina Stapel was born in Westphalia, Germany, in 1800. Part of the family lore about Katharina is that she remembered watching Napoleon's army marching toward Moscow in 1812. Family tradition also remembers her family as belonging to the nobility and lists Paderborn as the probable birthplace.
Paderborn had a population of 8700 at that time. It takes its name from the Pader, a spring-fed mountain stream that flows through the area. It first appears in recorded history in the year 777, when Charlemagne gathered the heads of the local Saxon tribes there for a "Reichstag". He subsequently made Paderborn his summer home. He met Pope Leo III there in a wooden church and had Paderborn established as a bishopic.
Bernard and Katharina were married in Germany and their four children were born there. They left Germany, the family story has it, so that Bernard, well-educated, tall and stately, could avoid being conscripted into the elite guard of the Kaiser. They came to America by steamship in 1842. Their ten year-old daughter died en route. They landed in New Orleans, made their way up the Mississippi to St. Louis and then to Fort Madison. They settled in St. Paul, Iowa, where Bernard farmed until his death on March 23, 1875. He is buried in the cemetery there. Katharina later moved out to Nebraska where their son Martin had gone to homestead. She died in St. Stephen's in 1887 and is buried there.
The abundance of Brockman's in the 1850 and 1860 census records for that area suggests that a larger contingent of the Brockman family may have come over from Germany.
