Frank Fredrick and Adeline Krull adopted Claude Ezra Holmes in approximatley 1903 from an orphangage, Claude, his sister Ethel and brother Percy had been placed there by their father, Charles Clarence Holmes, after the death of his wife, Stella Brown Holmes, she had died of Typhoid Fever while they lived in Anselmo, Ne.Frank and Adeline were the parents of ten children which they had before they adopted Claude.The following story relates much of the life of Frank and Adeline's life.
"The Francis (Frank) Fredrick Krull Story"
Francis Fredrick Krull was born March 19, 1833, in Mecklenburg, Germany. He was 18 years old when his family immigrated to America in 1851.He lived with his mother Louisa and three brothers-Henry, 21, Lewis 13,and William 9.Possibly the two sisters, Louisa & Mary were still homealso.They had all entered at the Port or New York on November 10, 185l.
In 1854, they were in Porter County, Indiana, brothers Christian, Charles (Carl), Fredrick, John, Henry and Francis filed for naturalization.Francis filed on the 9th day of October 1854 and renounced his allegiance and fidelity to the Prince of Mecklenburg.
Francis married Adeline Touro on May 17, 1859, in St. Joseph, Missouri.Daughter Emma Carolina was born April 1, 1859, in St. Joseph.(She wasone year old on the 1860 Census).George Franklin was born in August 1860, Louise Ida was born January 29, 1863, and William Robert was bornMary 1865, all in Missouri.The children got measles and William Robert died April 24, 1866, (age 11 months), 2 days later on April 26, 1866, George Franklin died of complications at age 5 years, 9 months.Theywere buried in Missouri.Emma Caroline was now 7 years old and Louisa Ida was 3 years old, they survived.
The family then moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where Charles H. was born in August 1866.Adeline was pregnant with Charles when she lost her two boys.Between this and the move to Iowa, (nearly 400 miles) it could not have been easy?In 1869, Mary A. was born, Fredrick Frank on April 14, 1871, then on June 18, 1872, Charles H. (5years, 11 months) died of spinal meningitis.In 1876, Scarlet Fever hit the family.Mary A. died December 19, 1876, she was 7 years old, and 9 days later John F. died, hewas 3 years, 10 months of age.They were buried in Dubuque County, Iowa.This now left only Emma Caroline, 17 years old, Louise Ida 13, and Fredrick Frank, 5 years old.
In 1879, the family moved to Nebraska, (450 miles to the southwest), locating in Sprague, Nebraska.In January 1880, Elizabeth was born.A year and 9 months later, Frances Rosie Ellen was born on September 15, 1881.Adeline was now 40 years old.On November 12, 1892, Elizabeth died from Typhoid Fever, she was 12 years, 10 months of age.
Francis and Adeline reared four of the ten children they brought intothis world.Francis Fredrick was now 59 years old and Adeline was 51.They must have decided that the Centerville Precinct (Sprague, Ne.)was where they would live out their lives as they had the bodies of their five children who died, (2 in Missouri and three in Iowa) moved to theCenterville Cemetery (north of Sprague, Ne. approximately 2 miles) where they were buried beside Elizabeth.
In the 1900 Census, a son is shown, he is the adopted son of Francis and Adeline, he is 13 years old and the Krulls called him Homer, his birth name was Claude Ezra Holmes.Some years later, April 11, 1926, Claude would marry Mae Adeline Krull, (youngest daughter of his step-brother, Fredrick Frank and Maglena Rahorst Krull).
Francis (Frank) Fredrick Krull died May 14, 1911, at Sprague, Nebraska, and he was buried near his children at Centerville Cemetery.On May 18, 1925, Adeline Touro Krull died in Lincoln, Nebraska, at the home ofher youngest daughter, Frances Rosie Ellen Spellman (Lulu).She too was buried in Centerville Cemetery.

In regards to Grandpa's death certificate, he was inbalmed by an undertaker who had a small establishment in Hickman, Nebraska.I don't remember if Grandpa's body was taken to Hickman or not, but believe it was.I do know they put his body in the house.I was so upset.I was 10 yearsold then.Later my mother wrote after my family and I had moved out west that the mortuary had burned down, cause of fire was due to an overheated heater.She said they had gotten the bodys out and they were notcremated by the fire.I do know that during World War I, the mortuarywas over filled and they had bodies in the sheds.Uncles Art Spellman was kept at home after he died and before burial.The custom then was wakes.I remember being at Aunt Lu.The special nurse they had for Uncle Art was still there after he had died, she ask me to go in with her toput inbalming fluid (felmaldahide) on his face and arms, this was usedto keep down discoloring whishers which had grown out on his face andthe nurse blew the light out, then she said to me, "Where are you?"She reached out and took a hold of my hand and yelled, "Boo".I nearly went into a fit.Bill Spellman and a neighbor was there with Aunt Lu.Thenext day my Dad came out and took me home, He said, "Thats no way to treat her".After Uncle Art's funeral, Aunt Lu begged me to come out, Icould go to and from work, but stay with her at nights.I far rather not of stayed but felt sorry for her and the kids.There should be a record in Court House, Lincoln, Nebraska.Thats where they registered all deaths.When I worked for Dr. Lamb I reported many deaths there.
The mortician's name was Nick Brokoma. (Tice Brokoma)He also cared forGrandpa and Grandma's daughter Louise who had been married to Ed Stutheit.I know that that mortuary was there for many years. I had gone with Aunt Lu to view Aunt Louise's body, I could not go to the funeral,had to stay with the kids, Aunt Lu's children and my brothers and sisters. Mr. Brokoma was the same man who cared for my little brother whenhe died, he was the last to be born to our mother, that was 1916.Butthey kept brother in the home to save expenses.Dad and Uncle Art madea casket for him.Dad bought a grave box to place it in.Had a church funeral but Bill Krull (William Krull) took the body to the cemetary, saved money there also.Your mother (she means Margaret Alma Knox Krull,wife of Mable's brother, Raymond F. Krull) should remember this as theKnoxes lived in Sprague at that time, I remember.They later lived ina house on Main Street, Sprague, not to far from Grandma Krull's (Adeline Touro Krull) house in Sprague.Aunt Lena Spellman, an old person, rarely went any where after she and Uncle Frank were married.There onlydaughter, Emma, was a cripple due to Spinal Mensites they thought later years.She (Emma) lived to be 89 years old in spite of her severe condition.Bill Spellman, her brother lived with her until he died.GuessJohn's wife is still alive (John Spellman).
Foot note:The little brother mentioned was Paul Omer Krull, parents Fredrick Frank and Maglena Pauline Rahorst Krull, born June 27,and diedJune 30, 1915, Hallam, Nebraska.
The many bodies during World War I, which was stacked in the sheds outside the mortuary which Mable mentions was due to the influenza whichhit the United States during 1916 and 1917. Rural areas were no exception to the disease and many died in eastern Nebraska. Embalming was used, but due to the number of deaths, they were taken care of as quickly as they could.In the fall-winter months it was wise placing the bodies outside as it was cold.

Adaline Tourot was the sixth child of Peter Thourot and Suzanne Bonameborn on 15 Mar 1840 in Salina, New York [now known as Syracuse, New York].

Adaline married Francis Fredrick Krull on 17 May 1859 in Saint Joseph,Missouri. They had ten children together. They adopted one child together.

Adaline passed away on 18 May 1925 in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was 85 years old.
