Dickens family letter "Our Dickens Heritage": "THOMASDICKENS, under whose revolutionary War service a number of us havebeen granted Membership in Son of the American Revolution and some ofour Nieces have been granted Membership in the Daughters of theAmerican Revolution, was the second son of the above RevolutionaryPatriot, Joseph Dickens. His birth occured on 8 October 1761,Northhampton County, North Carolina. His marriage to Mollie Stevens isrecorded in Anderson's "Three-hundred Marrriages in North Carolina,Halifax County". There he lived and had two sons before the 1790census enumerator reached them. He and his family of seven moved toChatham County, North Carolina, before 1880, and there his will wasmade 18 February 1850 and there he died on 23 May 1852. From his will,pension and other records, we are to reconstruct the following list ofhis children: Lunsford b.1789 Halifax Co., N.C. Merritt 1790 " Thomas1791 " Gideon 1795 " Lewis 1797 " Uriah 1802 Chatham Co., N.C. Richard1805 " Nehemiah 1806 " Joseph 1808 " Manassa 1812 " (Nioma) m. FuquayThomas Dickens served as a Private, Captain Bascot's Company, TenthRegiment, North Carolina Continental Line. In his late years (1838) apension of eight dollars a month was granted to him. Hampton Co.. He was the son of JosephDickens and Elizabeth Unknown. Thomas served in the military at NorthCarolina, in 1782. A census listed Thomas as head of household atChatham County, North Carolina, on 21 January 1786. District 5, takenby Giles Lang. Thomas Dicken: 1 WM 21-60 yrs. No women, children, orslaves..3 He married Molly Stevens at Halifax County, North Carolina,in 1786. Thomas was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 Censusat Chatham County, North Carolina. Pittsbon Township. Page 399..4Thomas applied for a military pension at Chatham County, NorthCarolina, in 1832. "Revolutionary War Pension Application of ThomasDickens #S41509. 13 February 1832. Pittsboro, Chatham County, NorthCarolina. ORIGINAL CLAIM Declaration in order to be placed on thepension list under the Act of 18 March 1828. State of North Carolina.Chatham County. On this the 13th day of February 1832 personallyappeared in open Court, it being a Court of Record for the Countyaforesaid, Thomas Dickens resident of said County age 79, who beingfound duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the followingdeclaration: In order to obtain the provisions made by the Act andcomplying with the 18 March 1828 and the 1st May 1820, that he ThomasDickens states he enlisted on the ? day and ? month (not recollected)in the year 1782 in the State of N.C. in the Company Commanded byCapt. Bactes)?) in the Regiment Commanded by Colonel Little in theLine of the State of North Carolina on the Continental Establishmentthat continued to ?? (can't recall), the said Corps until the close ofthe Ware when he was discharged from the service in the State of NorthCarolina. That he relinquishes all claim wha so ever to a pensionexcept the present, and that his name is not on the roll of any otherState except the State of North Carolina. He further states thefollowing reasons for not making earlier applications for a pension:The reason for not having made application earlier are fro want ofinformation on how to make proper application and for want of somefriends to do the business correctly which I was unable to do myself.In accordance of the Act of May 1820 I do solemly swear that I was aresident citizen of the United States of the 18th day of March 1818and that I have not since that time by gift, sale, or in any mannerdisposed of my property or any least thing whether through charity torelinquish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act ofCongress. Which was submitted an Act to provid for certain personsengaged in land and naval service of the United States in theRevolutionary War, passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that Ihave not had any pension in trust for me, any property in securities,contracts, debts due to me nor have I any income other than what iscontained in this schedule here into submitted and by me suscribed andthat since the 18th of March 1818 no change have been made regardingmy property. His mark (Thomas Dickens). The above duly sworn for inopen court on the 13 day of February 1832. N.C. one hundredninety acres land $100.00 one mare and colt $ 23.00 one logger and VGhersin Brite $ 20.00 two sows and two shoats $ 6.00 total $149.00 Thecertification of this applies in farming and my old age andinfirmities which make me unable to provide and no one else....(unreadable). The remainder of my family is Samuel, my wife name isMolly, she recently gave up, Mol has been confined by her back andstiffness is disabledand has been unable to walk ...(unreadable)appearance will ....(unreadable) walk....(unreadable). My son Samuelis unable to do ...(unreadable) and is ableto do asmuch...(unreadable) having she is ...(readable) tires of age ...(unreadable). 27th day of present month February. Thomas was listed asthe head of a family on the 1840 Census at Chatham County, NorthCarolina. Thomas Dickens, age 82, is shown as a Revolutionary WarPensioner. Page 178..5,6 Thomas was listed as the head of a family onthe 1850 Census at Chatham County, North Carolina. Location: LowerRegiment. Page 448..7 Thomas died on 23 May 1852 at Chatham County,North Carolina, at age 90. From Newberry, Jarrel M.: The Dickens Heritage: Thomas was a Rev War Vet drew a small pension while living atPittsboro, Chatham Co NC. until his death in 1852. Thomas left a willwhich named only his daughter Manassa who had stayed with Thomas tocare for him in his old age after all the other family members hadleft to move to Tennessee This does not mean the Tennessee childrenhad lost interest in their father Thomas. I have a copy of a very wellwritten letter to the US Pension Bureau from Uriah Sr Dickens regarding his fathers pension amount increase.
