William Buecher appeared alone as the sponsor for the baptism of Davidb. 9 Jan 1793, son of Abraham Spanseyler and Elizabeth. [Note:Researchers should expect the the orignal German name handwritten inthe church book was Spanseiler or Sponseller. Spansyler is anAmericanized version of this name probably converted by the author'sof the Adams Church Records book.] William was listed with land, a wagon maker. Also lists a William,Jr. Willm. Bucher and An. Mar. Sellin, single, appeared on 10 Apr 1796 forthe baptism of Whillhelm Kufer [Keefer] b.11 Mar 1796, son of Friedr.and An. Mar. [Note: Researchers should suspect that the mother AnnaMaria could be the daughter of William Bucher, or, the daughter ofAnna Maria Sell (Sellin is old German for the female gender of theSell surname.) There was a close association between these families;the Sells appear many times as sponsors for baptisms of children byWilliam's brothers.] Jacob Winterode's will was probated around this time and William was awitness or surety. His father Henry's inventory is filed and sons John and William werelisted as executors. Included on the list: William Beeher . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $100 Lewis Beeher . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . . $267 Samuel Beeher . . . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . . . $110 And under single men: William Beeher . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $1 Several related families appear on the same Census page in 1800 inGermany Township. A Samuel Beaher is listed with this household: Males (born) Under 10 (1791-1800) = 1 son 26-44 (1756-1774) = 1 father Samuel Females (born) Under 10 (1791-1800) = 3 daughters 26-44 (1756-1774) = 1 wife William Beaher has this household: Males (born) 16-25 (1775-1784) = 1 26-44 (1756-1774) = 1 father William Females (born) 45 & over (<=1755) = 1 mother? On the same census page are several allied family surnames that marrythe Bucher/Beecher families: Barbara Wintrode married Samuel Bucher, and Catherine Wintrode marriedhis brother Frederick. On this page we find their father, "JacobWinterode Capt." and the households of a younger Jacob Winterode, AdamWinterode, and Barbara Winterode. Jacob Bear is the neighbor of William Beaher. Further research isneeded to prove this Jacob is related to the Anna Bare/Baer/Bear whomarried Nicholas Bucher b.1755 of Manheim Township. Other evidenceshows the Baers married and exchanged land with the Wintrodes. William was the witness for the baptism of William Reck, b. 17 Dec.1800, son of Christian Reck and Sophia [William's sister.] He waslisted as single. Wm. Bucher is listed with this household: Males (born) 10-15 (1795-1800) = 1 son 26-44 (1766-1784) = 1 father William Females (born) 16-25 (1785-1794) = 1 wife In the History of Western MD on page 1063: "Referring to the files ofthe MD Herald and Hagerstown Advertiser, we find the following wereresidents of Hagerstown during the years from 1805 to 1815, inclusive: ... Beecher, William, grocer Beecher & Nead, merchants" --- An advertiserment for the Beecher and Nead grocery appeared weekly in1811 in the Hagers-town Advertiser and stated: "Beecher & Nead,RESPECTFULLY inform their friends and the public, that they haveformed a Co partnership, and intend constantly keeping a generalassortment of GROCERIES and LIQUORS, which they will dispose of eitherwholesale or retail. As they are determined to sell on moderate terms, they hope to merit and receive a liberal share of public patronage.May 14." From 1811 to 1818 the church record book shows the baptisms of WilliamBucher and wife Elizabeth. In 1820 the William Beacher household had: Males (born) Under 10 (1811-1820) = 2 sons 45 & over (<=1775) = 1 father William Females (born) 26-44 (1776-1794) = 1 wife On the next census page 111 are two more Beachers: Samuel Beacher's household had: Males (born) 10-15 (1805-1810) = 1 sons 16-25 (1795-1804) = 2 [too young to be Samuel] Females (born) 10-15 (1805-1810) = 1 daughter 16-25 (1795-1804) = 1 daughter 45 & over (<=1775) = 1 wife (Barbara Winterode) Catherine Beacher's household had: Females (born) 26-44 (1776-1794) = 2 daughters 45 & over (<=1775) = 1 Catherine
