Beecher, 62, store keeper, was living with Samuel, 64,brother, and a servant and boarder. Everyone was born in PA. They wereat 130 King Street. Rev. Edmund Leaf, D. D., was a native of Pottstown, where he was bornin 1818. He died at Birdsboro, in Berks, PA, in 1890. He was a rectorof St. Gabriel's Episcopal church at Douglassville from 1844 to 1876.His father, George Leaf, was a pioneer merchant of Pottstown, and diedthere in 1823. His children: George, Thomas, William, Harlan, Edmund,Mary, Anna, Julia, Elizabeth. Mary married Thomas Boyd. Elizabethmarried Daniel H. Beecher, for many years a prominent merchant ofPottstown. Edmund was the last survivor of the family. Pottstown's (and the 's) oldest department store is Ellis Mills, Inc.Ellis Mills started the store in 1873. In the beginning he sold bothto retail and wholesale customers and to rural customers with the aidof a horse-drawn mobile store in a wagon. In 1898 Ellis Mills boughtthe Beecher store at 223 High Street and has been located there eversince. The Mills family still owns and operates the store. On 13 December 1890, a fire in the old Beecher store had destroyedmany adjacent stores along High Street. Many were replaced; the storeEllis Mills bought was one of them. The Beecher store had been ageneral merchandise and dry-goods store and was larger than the Millsstore in 1898, when it was sold to the Mills family. Daniel H. Beecher of Pottstown, Penn., founder of the dry goods houseof L. & W. C. Beecher, which he started in 1838, and one of thebest-known business men in the Schuylkill Valley, died of gripyesterday, aged seventy-five years.
