Marriage Notes: Translated from the Register of Marriages Huetten(11/1828): -----Begin German marriage record or translation----- ¥ Oct. 19th, 1828 The bachelor Johann Martin Hass, legitimate son of the late "Inste" Friederich Christ. Hass and Gertrude Elisabeth née Hass in Kochendorf, and Margaretha Mahrt, legitimate daughter of the "Haeuerinste" JuergenMahrt and Maria née Tams in Osterbuy. The bride produced a certificate of vaccination by Suadicani, 1810. The groom's one issued by army surgeon Haase the 6th Nov. 1820. Comment : "Inste" : member of the rural unpossessing working class, livi ng in accomodations that came with the job, most often with all their family. The employments were not limited to a season, as was usual for the farmhands and maids who worked in half-years-terms of employment. The word may betranslated as "resident worker". An "Inste" may have possessed a cow, two goats, and some poultry.Butthe main characteristic feature was : he paid no land tax. He owned noland. So also the retired old folks on a farm who have handed over theirfarm to the younger generation may be regarded as "Insten". "Haeuerinste" : also an Inste as above, but he did some farming onland that he had leased. The word "haeuern" or "heuern" is the same as "tohire". ------End German record or translation and comments-----
