LEE PRALL GUILTY
Jury so returns verdict this afternoon.

The case of the State of Iowa vs Lee Prall was concluded today, the juryreturning a verdict of guilty after being out a short time. The greaterpart of the testimony was heard yesterday after state produced a numberof witnesses who swore that they purchased beer of the defendant at hisplace of business on Lower Chestnut Street and the location of the littleroom where the liquor was dispensed was described by most of them. Thedefense tried to show that the liquor was nothing but hop ale or malttonic and that it was in no way intoxicating. It was also attempted toimpeach some of the state's evidence by showing that several of thewitnesses had, for a money consideration, agreed to swear that it was notbeer but hop ale athey purchased from Prall and this proposition was madeto a friend of the defendant. But this attempt rather miscarried. Thedefendant himself went on the stand and swore positively withoutreservation, that he never sold or kept for sale, andywhere in his life, intoxicating beverages, like hop ale. After a few witnesses were heardthis morning the attorneys made tehir arguments. Mr. Meredith, for theState, was content so simply review evidence and put it before the juryin what he considered the proper light. Mr. Boorman, for the defense, amde a very elaborate speech in which he told of the previous life andreputation of the defendant, what an excellent character he had bourne, and how unreasonable it was to suppose that he would risk being sent tojail in order that he might make a little money selling intoxicatingliquors, embellishng his speech with quotations from history andliterature and adding many perporations about liberty, honesty and JohnHoward Paine, the author of "Home Sweet Home." The arguments wereconcluded, the jury instructed and sent out shortly before noon, andabout half past one the attorneys were notified that verdict had beenfound. When all convened the foreman announced that the defendant wasfound guilty as charged. The sentence will doubtless be havier than itwould have been had the defendant pled guilty, or had not taken the standin his own behalf. (Jan. 30, 1900 Daily Telegraph, Atlantic, Iowa)

Lee Prall, found guilty after a trial for running a liquor nuisance, wasadjudged to pay a fine or $400, and attorney's fees of $100, and allcosts in the case. In lieu of paying the fine, he was sentenced to 120days in the county jail. Appeal bond was fixed at $600. (Feb. 20, 1900,Daily Telegraph, Atlantic, Ia.)
