Notes for this person

From a family tree project by Kristen Farnsworth, 1979:

Mabel Doescher, (Leroy's mother, my great- grandmother) was the second youngest in her family and was two years old when her mother died. Her mother died when her youngest brother was being born. There were no doctors to help. Her brothers and sisters were Charlie, Henry and Glenn, Mary, Ida, and Jessie. Mabel was born and raised on a farm and her brothers were all farmers. Ide's husband was a plasterer. During the Depression they couldn't even pay the interest on their farm and so their folks went bankrupt. Her older brother didn't like farms so Henry (the youngest brother) and [her future husband], Louis took over and took care of Mabel until she was 15 years old which was the age she was married.

My impressions of Mabel Doescher

Mabel died long before I was born. All I knew of her was what my grandma would tell of her. My grandma really had a great deal of respect for her mother-in-law and spoke fondly of her. She used to say, "If ther's an angel in heaven, it's Grandma." She was married when she was only fifteen years old and gave birthto my grandpa seven months later. Her husband was old-fashioned and chauvenistic and treated her like a second-class citizen. He never thought she should ever have anything- including good food to eat. My grandma tells of a time when the entire family got together and Mabel made everyone steaks - one for each person. She passed the platter aruond and everyone took one. When it got to Louis, he took two, looked at her and asked, "Aren't you going to make one for yourself?" Louis used to say that he raised his wife, (which is sadly somewhat true). At one point in time, Mabel became so sick that her daughters decided that she needed to be hospitalized. When the ambulance arrived to pick her up, Louis got his suitcase and asked, "What are you taking her for? I'm the one who's sick."

Mrs. Lewis Kelly

BARNEVELD - Mrs. Lewis Kelly, 75, died Monday (Aug. 14, 1972) in a Madison hospital after a long illness.

The former Mable Doescher was a lifelong area resident.

She was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ.

Suriving in the madison area is a son, Lester, Sun Prairie.

The funeral willbe at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today at the Ayers Funeral Home and after noon Wednesday at the church.
