Joel Diehl was born near the Brick Church in Friend's Cove, Bedford County, PA and as soon as old enough learned the cooper's trade. He followed making barrels for several years, most of the time forHarley's Flour Mill, at Willow Grove, east of Bedford. In those days all the wheat not used for seed was ground in some mills, located along every mountain stream, and the flour not consumed at home wnet to the great markets in new barrels. Consequently, the cooper shop was an annex to the flour mill. He married Elizabeth Anne Overaker of that community. In 1864 they moved to Lacross, Wisconsin, where he was connected with a prominent lumber company many years. Five of the children graduated from the high school and the boys all had prominent positions.
