Er war Kaufmann und Gastwirt in Clarholz. Er mußte sehr vermögend gewesen sein, weil er in den Sterbfallsprotokollen des Kloster Clarholz als Geldgeber vieler bäuerlicher Einwohner des Kirchspiel Clarholz oft aufgeführt wird. Nach Ludendorf "Archiv der Altertümer Westfalens" soll er für die Kirche seiner Heimatpfarre einen Kronenleuchter aus Messing gestiftet haben. Das Wohnhaus des Kaufmann und Gastwirt Godefrid Samson steht noch heute in Clarholz am Propsteihof. Es ist das heutige ,Gasthaus Poppe": Ein breiter Fachwerkbau mit Tordurchfahrt zur Propstei - und Dorfkirche.
