In 1995 I found Caspar's parents listed on a church marriage record at Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church in St. Louis Missouri, the church being established on 4 July, 1848. His parents were listed as Anton and Gertrud Ebshorst. No other clues given as to the origin of Caspar Esphorst from Prussia. Then in 1997 a clue was discovered at the library in Salt Lake City, Utah. This clue broke down the brick wall in my genealogical research of Caspar Esphorst. I was elated. Now in 2010, I am ready to start writing my book on all my genealogical findings over the past two and a half decades. The first volume of my books will concentrate on my favorite ancestor Caspar Esphorst. I feel connected to this ancestor through records, many pictures, walking in the ancestral home and hearing the church bells in Mastholte, Rietberg, Westphalia, Germany. I have extended his heritage back to the late 1600's when the surname was actually Brissman(Breische). In the Northwestern part of Germany, for nearly one thousand years certain family names were passed down from farm owner to farm owner, despite interruptions of the natural blood lineage. Therefore, a man changed his surname when he moved onto a farm of a specific status. This tradition helps explain how the surname changed from Brissman (Breische) to Austerweimann and then to Esphorst by the marriage of a women who owned the family farm. My quest for the discovery of my ancestors across the ocean has lead to alot of travel, fun, meeting people, and accumulation of much data on my heritage. I feel that I have collected enough data to start working on my book; it will be titled, " A Journey to Discovery and Success through the Life of my Immigrant Ancestors". Since I have so much information I have decided to break this book into volumes. Each volume being my immigrant ancestor. I will focus on the immigrant ancestor in each volume and branch off to the ancestors and decendents of that immigrant. My first book will concentrate on my most interesting and favorite immigrant ancestor, Johann Caspar Esphorst. Trip to Germany September 2007 Visited the town of Mastholte and met the Esphorst family. Took a tour of the Esphorst farm. Have lots of pictures and memories. Calvary Cemetery where Caspar Esphorst is buried: 5239 West Florissant Avenue St. Louis, MO 63115 Located to the north of downtown St. Louis, MO just off Interstate 70 * From I-70 East take the West Florissant Avenue exit. * Turn Left onto West Florissant Ave. * The entrance to Calvary Cemetery is just past Calvary Drive. * From I-70 West take the West Florissant Avenue exit. * Follow the exit to the Right. * The entrance to Calvary Cemetery is just past Calvary Drive. Calvary Cemetery, in north St. Louis, is the site of the main office for the north and outlying cemeteries in the area. These cemeteries are: Calvary, Sacred Heart, St. Ferdinand, St. Mary's, St. Monica, St. Charles Borromeo and Our Lady. It is the second oldest cemetery of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Established in 1854, it contains the graves of many noted persons who were identified with the very beginning of St. Louis. Others were conspicuous in its later development and in national affairs. Some of the old burials and tombstones were moved to Calvary from much older Catholic Cemeteries originally existing in the present downtown area. Many of the cemetery memorials and lot designs are of architectural interest. In addition to those listed in the Historical tour of the cemetery, other well-known St. Louis family names will be noticed on monuments along the self-guided tour, which begins at the main entrance of the cemetery, West Florissant at Union Avenues. Calvary boosts two mausoleum complexes. The indoor, two story Shrine Mausoleum offers single, tandem and companion crypts, and two beautiful chapels for committal services. There is none other like it in the area. The outdoor All Saints Mausoleum and chapel offers single and tandem crypts, and niches for the inurnment of cremated remains. Traditional monument and lawn level marker lots are available iin many sections of the cemetery, as are single and two grave shared family monument lots. Lawn crypts are offered, with many options for memorialization. There are lots designated for private family mausoleums and single sarcophagi units. That is why it took substantially more than 400 Euro of my time. But everything is all right now. I have put together a family tree as well as a list of all marriage entries found in the Church records. It would actually be better to write a narrative report; otherwise an uninitiated reader would never be able to figure this out. The records transcribed are connected with the estate farms of Esphorst and Österwiemann. I will only provide the dates for your St. Vit ancestors. All of these lines could still be developed through extensive research. The ancestors in Rietberg County could be traced back to about 1550. In the meantime, I have had the original records transported from the Esphorst estate farm by Alverdissen to Detmold. If you have time and are interested, you can inquire in the state archive there under my name regarding the file "Esphorst, Moese, vol. 1, page 28. On page 87 you will find how your ancestor Caspar Esphorst was contractually separated from that estate farm; he signed his own signature. September 19, 1794, minutes of the chamber court, file 404, page 289 Marginal notation: Esphorst in Moese, full heirs Widower et improlis farm owner Mr. Esphorst married Elisabeth Suthuis from the Wiedenbrück community. The bride is from a family with hereditary rights under the noble house and church of/at Herzebrock. She presented from her feudal overlord not only a certificate of release issued at Herzebrock on September 16 of the current year, but also a permission to marry issued on the same day. According to that document the following items were authorized for her dowry coming from the Suthues farm: 40 Reichsthaler in coin that must be paid within three years, four cows, one horse, one foal, one ceremonial dress, and one typical bridal carriage. Because not all of these items are available at the Esphorst farm, the bride's brother, farm-owner Bührmann, paid the groom 80 Reichstaler in the clerk's office and also 79 Reichstaler 8 Groschen in coin. The owner of the Österwiemann farm is to pay the groom (a step-son) 30 Reichstaler as a dowry annually on St. Martin's Day consisting, as well as 10 Reichstaler, one horse, 1 foal, two cows, two bulls, one ceremonial dress and a typical bridal carriage. Because the immediate delivery of the last two has been promised, the groom has promised on this day to pay from his own resources an additional sum of 60 Reichstaler to complete his obligations. 1747, settlement contracts, spring court session, bill of sale in Mastholte and Moese, file 2522, page 75. Anna Margaretha Schwale, a daughter of Schwalen, the owner of a farm in Bokel will move onto the farm owned by the Esphorsts and marry Mr. Esphorst. Because both farms are rather small, with the Esphorst farm having some swamp land that is in very poor condition, but is currently being treated by the owner, the bill of sale was negotiated at 60 Reichstaler. 1730, settlement contracts, spring court session, bills of sale in Moese, file 2496, page 74 of the old book Anna Christina Surman from the Langenberg community will move to the Esphorst farm that is indebted under the stipulation a bill of sale be issued to the amount of 40 Reichstaler. The estate farm consists of 3 ½ [units] of bottom land, where it is almost impossible to have good rye crop; also garden land measuring 3 [units] where I can harvest about 4 [measures] of hay annually; 15 [units] of forest were swine can be raised and perhaps 15 fatted annually; approximately 6 [measures] of other wooded land that is the source of firewood; no fish products. 3. There is also approximately 10 [measures] of additional land on our farm used for various other purposes. 4. I pay one Reichstaler annually for fall leases and 2 Reichstaler for spring leases, 2 Reichstaler for servant wages, a total of 18 Reichstaler for leases, 12 Reichstaler for wages for new servants, 8 Reichstaler for treasures [?], 8 Reichstaler for unskilled labor wages, 1 Reichstaler and 4 Groschen for marriage expenses, 1 ß [unit], 6 Groschen for salt, 4 Groschen for sewing, 4 Groschen for a steer, and one fatted pig. 5. I paid to bury my sister's son Johann two years ago. I had paid 43 ½ Thaler for a release certificate. I still owe 50 Reichstaler for his dowry. I am the father of the six children born to my wife and none of them are married yet. 6. None of our property from our inheritance has been disposed yet. I owe 15 Reichstaler to Rickmeyer's son Henrich; I borrowed that from him two years ago and I pay him 1 Lippe [unit] of oats annually for that. I also borrowed 10 Reichstaler from Adrian and Vogt two years ago. And I pay him/them one [unit] of oats annually. And I owe the church 10 Reichstaler and I pay them 18 Groschen annually. 7. I have no other liabilities. The spelling is at times quite arbitrary and I have standardized some terms in order to make them more legible. Most of the fees were paid in Reichstaler (Rtlr.), Schilling (ß), Mariengroschen (Mrg. or Gr.), and Pfennigen (Pf.). In 1765, the bills of sale, death settlements, currency exchanges and release certificates within the county of Rietberg were converted into permanent settlements. That is why such entries disappear and are replaced by court minutes and marriage contracts. Beginning in 1765, the bills of sale and the death settlements only exist in the cases of estate farms beyond the boundaries of the county. A family history or a farm history can be compiled back to about 1550 from the extensive documentation in the Rietberg County archive. An examination of the following documents would be valuable for the compilation of a family history. These documents would be most valuable to describe the daily life on these farms: Court minutes (featuring mostly civil disputes) are preserved since about 1660 Sendbrüchten: these tell of "carnal transgressions" that were heard before a church court Brüchtenprotokolle: these describe the penalties; they begin in 1557 Baumbrüchten, Krebsbrüchten, Krebsfangen: unauthorized felling of trees Zuschläge: information regarding land acquisitions Construction permits: the count issued these for construction of new homes Sales of houses that would be [taken down and] re-assembled elsewhere Count's expenses: what the count paid to craftsmen, employees, etc. Retirement documents: instructions for persons going into retirement Military enlistment papers Loan contracts Church seating assignments Border disputes Witness depositions: these sometimes feature information about the ages of the parties, their familial relationships, etc. Weather reports, such as hail storms, droughts, fires, etc. The land records from the Prussian era can be studied; they provide precise information about real estate, duties paid, property transfers; those records began in 1815. These are generally the most detailed files about specific families at specific estate farms. I had the opportunity to take a day trip and drive around the area where 6 farms were located that branch off the Esphorst research. In 2007, I did not know all these farms existed.

!!!!!!!!!Research Notes for immigrant ancestor J. Caspar Esphorst!!!!!!!!!!!!! A. Research up to the end of 1997 did not prove helpful in finding the ancestral home of Caspar Esphorst. 1. Naturalization record for Caspar listed he was from Prussia. 2. No other Esphorst surname in naturalization records of St. Louis other than Caspar. 3. Correspondence with Randy Esphorst in New Haven, Missouri did not support any new clues. 4. Found one file on the surname Esphorst at the SLGS office with a letter of request from Randy Esphorst with a response. No new information found. 5. Census records for Caspar could not be found for 1860 or 1870. 6. Passenger list for arrival of Caspar Esphorst was found but did not list ancestral home. His destination was St. Louis. 7. Nothing is listed in church records of Most Holy Trinity of St. Louis. B. Der heutige Bau weist als Errichtungsdatum den 11. Juni 1728 aus - so im Torbogen des stattlichen Hofgebäudes „verzeichnet``. Johannes Henricus Meyer Duhme ist der Bauherren des heutigen stattlichen Gebäudes mit Anna Maria Gertrudis Fahlhaus, die er einen Monat später am 10. Aug. 1728 heiratet. Heimatkundler Bertling erläutert vor der schönen Kulisse des Hofes Duhme der Besitzerin in der Mitte Mastholtes die Hofgeschichte des Meierhofes Duhme. Es gab sicherlich einen Vorgänger-Bau, denn Hof Duhme gehört zu den ältesten Hofanlagen in Moese, wird 1498 als „Dune`` bezeichnet (Dune = mittelhochdeutsch für Sumpf), also ein Hof in der Nähe eines Sumpfes. Das gesamte Gebiet von Moese, wiederum Name für Niederung, Feuchtgebiet, war zu dieser Zeit noch von Sümpfen durchzogen. Auf einer Karte von 1465 werden in der „Bauerschaft Moese`` nur die Höfe Schlepphorst (ältester Hof überhaupt) und Stuckemeyer aufgeführt. Wir können also das Gründungsdatum des Hofes Duhme in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts vermuten. MASTHOLTER NAMENSLISTEN 1554 und 1596 heißt es jeweils noch Johann Dune. Der Hof gehörte zu den leistungsfähigsten freien Meierhöfen in der Schutzgeld- und der Pachtliste des Rietberger Grafen. Meier, der Titel stammt vom Lateinischen „major``, der Erste. Als Erster in seiner Umgebung war er zuständig für die Ablieferung der Abgaben aller umliegenden kleineren Höfe an den Grafen. Dafür hatte er das privilegierte Recht, den Hof an die Erben weiter zu geben - das galt für die „Unfreien``, die Leibeigenen der Grafen keineswegs. Die ältesten Kirchenbücher Mastholtes, die im Bischöflichen Archiv Paderborn im Original vorhanden sind, beginnen mit dem Jahr 1681. Davor gibt es keine (bekannten) kirchlichen Unterlagen, die in der Regel konkrete Personen auflisten. Im Dreißigjährigen Krieg (1618-1648), der auch in der Grafschaft Rietberg verheerende Folgen hatte, sind wohl die Kirchenbücher der Vorzeit verbrannt. Sie hätten eine weitere Rückführung der Stammlinien in Mastholte ermöglicht. So bleiben uns für die Zeit vor 1680 nur allgemeine Namens-Listen außerhalb Mastholtes, die zwar Namen enthalten, ohne aber die Personen konkret zu benennen. In unserem Falle taucht der Name „junior Dunne`` (unzweifelhaft gemeint „Dune``) also erstmalig in der „Willkommschatzung des Fürstbischofs von Münster`` (Begrüßungssteuer) von 1499 auf. Sie listet alle damaligen Hausstellen mit der Personenzahl in den Bauerschaften Moese und Mastholte. Im Hause Dune gab es lt. Liste damals 4 erwachsene Personen, konkrete Personen etwa mit Vornamen werden nicht genannt. In der ältesten, noch vorhandenen Liste aus der Grafschaft Rietberg von 1554, der so genannten „Wachtgeldsordnung``, in der aufgeschrieben ist, was die Höfe an Schutzgeld dem Grafen zu bezahlen hatten, taucht dann schon konkret der Hofbesitzer mit Namen auf: Johan Dune. Anhand der Höhe des Obulus, der zu entrichten war, gehört der Hof dann zu den großen - neben Hanenbrink, Hakenkamp, Haselhorst, Stukemeier, Morfeldt, Vechteler, Schlephorst, Hoiken, Pöppelbaum und Esphorst in der Bauernschaft Moese, die alle als Meierhöfe geführt werden. Die Bedeutung hat sich auch fünfzig Jahre später nicht geändert in der erhaltenen „Herbstpachtliste 1596``. Der Name unseres Falles ist weiterhin „Johan Dune``. Der früheste konkrete Eintrag einer Person ins Kirchenbuch namens „Duhme`` ist das Sterbedatum eines Jugendlichen namens Otto Duhmen + .09 1699. 1728 in der Viehzählungsliste heißt es dann endgültig mit heutigen Schreibweise Duhme, zwischenzeitlich wohl durch Schreibfehler geändert. Das kam häufig vor; die wenigen, die des Schreibens mächtig waren, machten dennoch oft Fehler durch ihre schlechte Schrift - meistens übrigens die Pastöre mit ihren Eintragungen in die Kirchenbücher. So ist der erste konkrete Eintrag des Namens ins Mastholter Kirchenbuch also „Otto Duhmen``. KEIMZELLE DES DORFES Der Hof Duhme ist ja die Kernzelle oder Keimzelle des heutigen Dorfes Mastholte - er ist also schon in der 2. Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts urkundlich erwähnt. Nach Gründung des Kirchspiels Mastholte 1570 kam später die Pfarrkirche, die bis mindestens 1656 in Mastholte- Süd stand, als Neubau in die unmittelbare Nähe des Hofes Duhme. Vorher aber war der Hof oft auch als Ersatz für einen kirchlichen Raum benutzt worden. Wir erinnern daran, dass vor Gründung des Kirchspiels Mastholte die Menschen zur Kirche in Wadersloh gehörten. Die Menschen mussten sonntags dann des Morgens dorthin zur Kirche und eigentlich nachmittags noch einmal zur Andacht, genannt „Christenlehre``. Diese Andacht fand wegen der Entfernung zu Wadersloh (12 km Fußweg!) meistens auf der großen Deele auf dem Hof Duhme statt. Später (1656) entstand in unmittelbarer Nähe dann ja auch die neue Kirche St. Jakobus. Das Ganze dann Kern also des späteren Dorfes! Bis in die 1960er Jahare war der Hof Duhme Schauplatz des Pferdehandels anlässlich des Jakobi-Marktes im jeweiligen Juli eines Jahres Im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert war das Hofgelände auch Teil des kirchlichen Jakobi-Marktes; hier vor allem standen die Pferde, die in der Erntezeit auf dem Jakobi-Markt gehandelt wurden. (s. Foto) Zum einen lag der Termin zu Beginn der Erntezeit. Die Bauern betrachteten ihren „Bestand`` unter dem Blickwinkel der anstehenden Erntearbeiten und tauschten und verhandelten auf einem solchen Markt, bis das vermeintlich richtige Pferd für die kommenden Ernte-Arbeiten im Stall stand. Es konnte aber durchaus sein, dass nach getaner Erntearbeit auf einem Nach-Erntemarkt in der Soester Börde der „alte Klepper``, für die schwere Erntearbeit ungeeignet, nun wieder eingetauscht wurde. Kosten, sprich: Futter sparen! ENDE DER LEIBEIGENSCHAFT Heinz Heckemeier schuf ein sehr schönes Ölgemälde vom Jakobi-Pferdemarkt Mit dem Ende der Leibeigenschaft, der so genannten Bauernbefreiung durch die Franzosen 1806 mussten die Grafen die Höfe an die Betreiber verkaufen, wenn diese das wollten. Dann gab es lange Verhandlungen über den Preis. Denn es mussten ja frühere Abgabe-Verpflichtungen in Geld umgerechnet werden. Zum Beispiel „jährlich ein Rind, 1 fettes Schwein, 6 Hühner und jährlich zehn Rietberger Müdde oder neun Scheffel Hafer``. Was hieß das nun in Geld? Oft eine Abzahlung (Verrentung) von 50 Jahren. Der Vertrag glich einem langen Protokoll, das man Rezess nannte. Alle Rezesse bildeten ein großes Hypothekenbuch, das für Mastholte im Schloss Alverdissen lagert, einer Außenstelle des Staatsarchives Detmold. In diesem Hypothekenbuch wird „Caspar Meier Duhme`` als erster Eigentümer dieses Hofes 1822 nach der Ablösung vom Grafen genannt. Er heiratet dort am 5. Oktober 1824 Luise Meier, eine Tochter aus dem Haus des „Meier zu Mastholte`` (Mühle). Am 14. März 1891 schließlich heiratet Anton Große Wietfeld aus Benteler die Tochter im Hause Duhme, Catharina Duhme, und wird dadurch Hausherr an der Lippstädter Straße. Er nimmt den Namen des Hofes an: „Große Wietfeld gt. Duhme`` (genannt Duhme). Sein Sohn Caspar Große-Wietfeld, gt. Duhme, verheiratet mit Hedwig Dirkwinkel, übernimmt den Hof 1939 und vererbt 1965 das Anwesen an seine Nichte Barbara Nordhorn, geb. Große Wietfeld, weil er selbst kinderlos blieb. Der Hof ist seit dem Erbantritt 1965 vermietet, derzeit haben dort Pferde ihr Zuhause. Barbara Nordhorn hat seit ihrer Heirat 1970 mit Franz Nordhorn in Lippstadt ein Geschäft betrieben, aus dem die beiden sich jetzt zurück ziehen, um einen neuen Lebensabschnitt zu beginnen. Der Hof Duhme nämlich soll wegen seiner historischen Bedeutung für Mastholte in seiner äußeren Form bestehen bleiben. Im „neuen Lebensabschnitt`` aber kann sich Barbara Nordhorn durchaus eine andere Nutzung vorstellen. Sie will, wie sie sagt, den Hof einer Nutzung zuführen, die mit Menschen zu tun hat. Sie kann sich vorstellen, das Anwesen in eine Stiftung zu geben, die einem öffentlichen Träger ermöglicht, hier etwas für Menschen zu verwirklichen, wobei sie an den caritativen Bereich der Gesellschaft denkt. Sie hat noch keine konkreten Pläne, weiß aber, dass sie das Anwesen der Öffentlichkeit in dieser Form zur Verfügung stellen will. Ich finde sie sehr interessant. Vor allem haben mich die Bilder mit Mastholter Motiven beeindruckt, z.B. der Hof Esphorst mit der Langenberger Straße. Da kann man sich gut vorstellen, wie es früher hier ausgesehen hat. Oder die Dorfstraße (Lippstädter Str.), die ich so auch noch aus meinen Kindertagen kenne. Thus, it is possible that at least one of the children of Henry Ortbals came to live with his half-sister's family in Osage County. Edward has not been found in the federal census. The Miller Co. Permanent Record of Births identifies the parents of "Katy Mary Ortbals" as "Ed Ortbals" and "Mary Bax Ortbals. While it seems most likely that the "Ed Ortbals" in question was John Edward Ortbals, son of Johann Caspar Ortbals, who was resident in Miller Co. and who had a daughter, Catherine Mary, his wife was Gertrude Spellerburg, not Mary Bax. He followed other neighbors/friends from the small towns near Moese, so he was not really by himself. Heinrich Ortbals came to St. Louis in 1851. Caspar Ortbals came on the same ship and date as Caspar Esphorst in 1853. There are also Ortbals in Mastholte Church Records. He might of stayed with Heinrich Ortbals at 182 North 11th street when he arrived in St. Louis in 1853 until finding his home on 11th and Mallincrodt where he was found in 1856. 17. 11/24/14 Found Caspar Esphorst in the 1856 Missouri State Census for St. Louis, Missouri...................What a find. This just about accounts for his life in Germany and America. 18. Other passengers on the ship Ernestine in Dec 1851 were: Fred Wilm Moritz, Caspar and Elisabeth Ortbals, Caspar Schlepphorst, Joseph Stinemeyer, Fried Schweppe, Noppe, Bickert.
