Notizen zu dieser Person

James Ross entered the Continental Army in 1775 and served the whole ofthe war, though not in an active fighting capacity. "He was the most popular officer in Lancaster;" the best built man and the best rifle shot in the County.

In 1780 a large French force landed in Rhode Island to reinforce the Continentals in New York, making the British believe that a siege of NewYork would be the main thrust of the Continental army's campaign and accordingly splitting their forces, leaving Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown without naval support. The British besieged in Yorktown mounted many skirmishes but were unable to break out. James Ross was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis on October 19th 1781.
