LUDELL -- Donnie Lee Castens, 68, died Saturday (Feb. 18, 2006), at Kearney.
He was born May 4, 1937, on a farm near Ludell to Henry and Lillie (Neuhart) Castens. He was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church May 9, 1937,and was confirmed April 2, 1950. He attended Trinity Lutheran School, Rawlins County Public and Atwood High School, graduating in 1954.
He served in the U.S. Army and the Army Reserves, returning to the Castens farmstead, continuing the family tradition which dates back to 1893. He farmed and raised cattle and hogs until his death.
On Oct. 15, 1960, he married Ann Nyleve Niermeier. They had three children, Annette Marie, Allen Lee and Corey Dean. Ann died Aug. 11, 1975.
On Dec. 22, 1984, he married Viola Rummel Ross.
He held several leadership roles at Trinity Lutheran Church, includingchurch chairman. He also helped organize the 100th anniversary celebration of the church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ann, and her parents, Erich and Mildred Niermeier.
Survivors include his wife, Viola; children, Annette and husband, Jim Long of Wauneta, Allen and wife, Roxanne Castens of Ludell, and Corey, also of Ludell; step-children, Kathy Schneider, Debbie Fanders and LynnWright and their families; a brother, Vernon and wife, Geri Castens ofBroomfield, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at Redeemer Lutheran Churchin Atwood with the Rev. Don White officiating. Graveside services withmilitary honors and interment will follow at Trinity Lutheran Cemeteryin Ludell.
Visitation is Wednesday, 9 a.m.-8 p.m., at Williams Funeral Home in Atwood.
A memorial has been established.
