Translation on the tombstone of Ignatz Ripberger reads as following. ( Here rest in holy silence, Ignatz Ripberger, who after an age of 49 years, died on 23 October 1836. Peace. He left behind a wife and seven children. Peace. ) He was the first person buried in the cemetery at St. John's Catholic Church at St. Peter's, Franklin, Indiana. Ignatz and Regina Marketin Ripberger, Natives of Barvaria, Germany, came to Americia October 16,1835, and took up land near St. Peters, which was owned by Henry Rauch, Sr.. It was all woods when he entered it and put up log buildings. He was a blacksmith by trade and also a horse doctor. He and his wife lived there the rest of their lives, his death occurring about three years after coming to this country. As stated above, he was the first person buried in St. Peters cemetery. His wife now lies by his side. Ignatz Ripberger helped to oranize the St. Peters Church and helped erect the log buildings at St. Peters. Ignatz ( 1787-1836 ) and wife had seven children. Ignatz came to America with his cousin Johann Michael II. Inatz and his wife Regina Marketin and six children. Four died in Germany. Not sure what happened to the first daughter, Anna Margaretha.
