Herman Henry emigrated to the US a young man and probably landed in Baltimore, Maryland in August 1853. He then travelled to Pittsburgh, where he established a sort of boarding house or halfway house for other German immigrants while they where getting established in their new country. Henry (as was usually, known) and Catherine settled in Pittsburgh, PA and until his death operated a sort of hotel or boarding house for German immigrants.This domicile provided a place where the new arrivals could communicate in German eat German food and learn some of the basics needed to make it on their own in America.

From all indications this was a profitable venture and they were able to a mass a small fortune that was quickly dissipated by their children through less than successful business enterprises of their own. After Henry's death Catherine moved to Cincinnati, Hamilton, OH and lived with my father's family until her death in 1909.

The Hamburg ship GEORGE CANNING was built at Luebeck by Hans Jacob Albrecht Meyer, for the account of Robert Miles Sloman of Hamburg, in 1852 [Bielbrief (certificate of registry) 11 May 1852]. 296 Commerzlasten / 857 tons, 146.6 x 32.6 x 22.6 Hamburg Fuss (1 Hamburg Fuss = .28657 meter), length x beam x depth of hold.

The GEORGE CANNING sailed exclusively between Hamburg and New York. She was lost on 1 January 1855 on Gross Vogelsand, at the mouth of the Elbe River- 96 people died.
