The Quincy Daily Journal, Friday, October 4, 1912; page 7. DEATHS August H. Tansmann, 424 South Eighth street, died this morning at 6:50 o'clock, death being due to a complication of diseases and old age. Mr. Tansmann had been in poor health all summer, but it was not until about three weeks ago that his condition became serious. He was born in Esselhorst, Germany, June 7, 1835. The decedent came to this country in 1847 at the age of 10 years, coming directly to Quincy. He was the third oldest of a family of eleven children, being the son ofMr. and Mrs. Henry Tansmann, whom the older citizens of Quincy will remember. The site of the State street bank was the old family home of the Tansmann family. In 1862 the decedent, in company with the eldest brother of the family, F. W. Tansmann, crossed the plains in a covered wagon from Quincyto California. The two brothers endured many hardships on this journey as well as many dangers. Mr. Tansmann was a member of Luce's lodge, No. 439, A. F. and A. M.,an order to which he devoted much time and study. A remarkable thingconcerning the death of Mr. Tansmann is the fact that of the family of eleven children only the eldest and youngest now survive. The decedent is survived by his wife, Mrs. Catherine Tansmann, nee Schnellbecker, and five sons, Edward, of St. Louis; Andrew, of Salt Lake City, Utah; Elmer, of East St. Louis; Henry and August, of this city; two brothers, F. W. and H. H., of this city; two grandchildren and many other relatives. The funeral of the late August H. Tansmann will take place from the residence, 424 South Eighth street, Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.Interment will be at Woodland cemetery. Friends invited. ___________________________________________ - Research and Transcription by Tree Leaf. NB: He was born in 1835. Marker erroneously reads 1847. Date has been changed to match marker, per FAQ.
