The parish church was still standing in 1997. Wagner on 9/23/1974: A BURCH MEMORIAL PLAQUE TRINITY CNURCH, CHARLES COUNTY, MARYLAND On Sunday, May 23rd, (1954) at 3 p.m. in Trinity Church, Charles County, Maryland, a beautiful bronze plaque in memory of Oliver Burch, (1646-1729) and his wife, Barbara Scott Burch (of course we now know her name was Tennison...but this is how the newspaper article wrote it), of King and Queen Parish, communicants of Old Newport Church, will be dedicated by the Reb. Joseph O. Roberts, Rector of Trinity Parish. (Was REB a misspelling?). Old Newport Church, Newport Hundred, St. Mary's County, now Charles County, is said to have been the original Parish Church of King and Queen Parish, but became a chapel after the church at Chaptico was built in 1737. Trinity Parish was erected in 1744. The first Trinity Church was built in 1754, 200 years ago, on a tract of land known as "Lombey", the old homestead plantation of Oliver Burch, two acres of which tract, in 1753, was deeded to the Vestry for this purpose by Justinian Burch, Jr., grandson of Oliver Burch, and a member of the Vestry at the time himself. At this time the Rev. Isaac Campbell was the Rector of Old Newport Church, becoming its last rector, and the first rector of the new and first Trinity Church. Newport Church has long since disappeared, and a second Trinity Church, built during 1791, stands upon the site of the first, the Rev. Hatch Dent being the first rector. Over a period of many generations, the old church records record the births, marriages, deaths, religions and other activities of many of the descendants of Oliver and Barbara Scott (Tennison) Burch, of King and Queen Parish, Newport Hundred. Today, their descendants may be found from the Atlantic to the Pacific and some have lately settled in Alaska. The BURCH MEMORIAL Plaque is to be unveiled by Mr. Charles Llewellyn Burch, Jr., a gentleman who was born in Trinity Parish, and is now in his 89th year. He is a great, great, great, great grandson of Oliver and Barbara Scott (Tennison) Burch. Trinity Church is situated on Route 232 about 9 miles south of Route 5 at Bryantown, Charles County. Excellent roads every way. Source: The Causey Family Tree ----------------------------------- Oliver BURCH was baptized 30 Oct. 1647 Penrith, Cumberland, England. He patented a tract of land "Penray" in Charles County.5 In his will, this tract was called "Penrick/(Penrich?).6 Although in later deeds, the tract is also called "Penray," the similarity between the spelling in his will of Penrick/Penrich, and the town in Cumberland, England of Penrith lends credence to the thought that Oliver BURCH of Maryland is identical to the Oliver baptized in 1647 at Penrith, and that he named the tract after his village of origin. Supporting evidence is that Oliver in MD named his first two sons Justinian and Thomas (Justinian after his wife's father), and his first two daughters Katherine and Ann (Katherine after his wife's mother). Thomas and Ann, being the names of the parents of Oliver of Penrith. Note that Oliver also named a son Edward after what would be his surviving brother. In a 1726 land deposition Oliver BIRCH gave his age as about 80, closely corresponding with the 1647 baptism at Penrith. Oliver died between 15 Feb. 1726/7 and 27 May 1729 when his will was written and probated in King and Queen Parish, Charles County, MD. This deed was acknowledged by John Noe and Sarah, his wife === Charles County Court Records, March 1737/8 Court, Liber T#2, Page 425 Pursuant to the order of Mar Court in the 20th year of the dominion of the Proprietary, Commission issued to examine witnesses touching the bounds of a tract of land called Hadley, in possession of Robert Mackhorn. Commissioners appointed: Robert Yates, Andrew Chunn, George Hatton, and Geo: Brett of CC, Gent (not being any way related to the Petr, contiguous Proprietor, nor interested in the sd land). Hadley is in CC. The purpose of the Commission was to prove and perpetuate the memory of the bounds of Hadley. . And now here, at Mar Court, Robert Yates, Andrew Chunn, and George Hatton, return to this Court the Commission afd, with the following depositions and certificate annexed - The deposition of John Briscoe, age about 30, declares that about 10-11 years ago, he was employed by Robt: Mechon to run out a certain tract of land called Hadley, and that as they were running the lines, Oliver Burch met them at the place where the deponent now stands, and showed him a red oak and told him that it was one of the bound trees of Hadley Land, but the deponent can't charge his memory which way sd Burch knew it to be the bound tree. The deposition of Jona: Burch, age about 30, declares that about 10-11 years ago, his father, Oliver Burch, showed him a red oak where the deponent now stands, and told him, sd deponent, that he had heard that Capt. Barton should say that it was one of the bound trees of Hadley Land.
