The first estimates put German dead at 5,860 after lastnight’s raid. Himmler, becomes the Minister of the Interior." - "1943 August 23 The Allies launch the heaviest Allied air raid to dateagainst Berlin. Large parts of the Friedrichstrasse and Wilhelmstrasseare destroyed, including several ministries, hotels, despartment storesand other landmarks." Frau Runkel lived one block east ofFriedrichstrasse. - August 23/24, 1943 59 Halifaxes from 419, 427, 428, and 434 squadrons were joined by 8Lancasters from 426 squadron on an attack at Berlin. The crews were overthe target at between 18,000 and 22,000 feet, releasing 130,000 lbs ofhigh explosives and 126,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports,this attack was successful with serious damage being caused in someindustrial areas.
