[Bill's Nutt.FTW] Flora was raised by her uncle "Jake" Jacob Nutt. See source: pages 92-93, 246. Quotes below from some of the text: Flora attended school at Old Rock Church down on the Paluxy River and this is where they went to church too - and this is where they later held those great reunions which Flora and her brother Coke and wife often attended. She told of attending a "College" in Thorp Springs. The Hood County History, published by Junior Women's Club, Granbury, Texas, records information of ADD-RAN College, Granbury, Texas, there. (Changed in 1890 to ADD-RAN Christian University. Thorp Springs, Texas is located some 4 or 5 miles NW of Granbury on Hwy 4. A State Historical Survey Marker at Comanche Peak relates that "...students from ADD-RAN College - about 10 miles north - held picnics on the Peak." Flora often went to Granbury to shop - drove from Tolar to Granbury (about 9 miles) in their horse drawn buggy. Once when she was pregnant with her youngest child (Damon) when she had finished shopping and was ready to drive back to Tolar - she must have been in a hurry to get back home as she turned the horse too sharply which caused the buggy to turn over with her. Fortunately she was in injured and there was no effect on her pregnancy. In 1911 they moved to Colinsville, Texas. They were shipping everything by train. All the furniture was crated and several trunks of belongings were packed and in the depot in Granbury ready to be transported to Collinsville. That night the depot burned, destroying everything - a great loss - many things were irreplaceable. They lived in Collinsville only a short time and then moved to Tioga where Jesse acquired a photographic studio. Most of the picture shown herein were made in his studio. He also engaged some in real estate. (The source lists some deeds). Their next move was to Farwell, Parmer County, Texas, located on the Texas/New Mexico line, probably about 1915. Jesse was in the real estate business. Copies of his transactions are found on the pages that follow. They later bought a small hotel where they had roomers and boarders. Times were hard and jobs difficult to come by. Jesse and C. B. (his son) worked for a while on nearby ranches - Flora and Damon moved out to Uncle Coke Hopping's ranch - and soon the family moved to Lubbock, Texas where Jesse was engaged in the real estate business until his health failed. He passed away in the hospital there on November 24, 1919. Flora was able to keep boarders, but she had to go to work in a local hospital as a cook. She later worked in a laundry as a presser. The heat was hard on her, so she later kept children in people's own homes. She would have her own room and food. I remember at least one who was a teacher at Tech. In between the live-in baby sitting jobs she lived with her children and later with her brother and sister in law, Coke and Lelia Hopping. She was always lovingly thought of by all her family and friends. (As told by Damon Harris Nutt - Flora's youngest son)
