Beatty, deceased, will plea settle with Mrs. Mollie Beatty, Administratrix, and all persons having claims against said estate are notified to file same with her duly authenticat within the time allowed by law or same will be barred. The Lewis County Herald, July 28, 1921 RUFUS BEATTY DANGEROUSLY HURT Ambushed By Would Be Assassin Who Apparantly Left No Clue Rufus Beatty was ambushed by some unknown party last Friday evening about 8 P. M., while on his way home from Howards Switch, on the Nashville Tie Companys pike. His assailant struck him three times with some hard instrument, breaking the skull each time and left him for dead, making the statement to Murphy Beatty, son of the wounded man that he had killed h father because he was mean to his family, and fled into the woods. Mr. Beatty and his two sons were each driving a team the younger son in front and the elder behind and the assailant rushed from behind a tree, striking Mr. Beatty without the least warning, approaching him from his back. One of the boys remained with his father while the other went for help. He was taken to his home and Dr. Springer was called to dress his wounds and it was found that he was in a critical condition with little or no hope for his recovery. He has regained consciousness and according to latest reports from his bedside is resting some better today. (Thursday) Aug. 4, 1921 R. W. BEATTY RESTING SOME BETTER TODAY Rufus Beatty is reported to be resting some better today, though unconscious much of the time is thought to be on the road to recovery. No action has as yet been taken on any of the rumors that are afloat and the mystery may never be solved as to just who the guilty party may be. Sept. 1, 1921 INJURIES PROVE FATAL RUFUS BEATTY DIES His Statement That John Tharp Committed Crime Causes John's Absence MRS. BEATTY SWEARS OUT WARRANT Rufus Beatty died at his home on Trace Creek Thursday evening Aug. 25, after suffering for 34 days from injuries received from some unknown party on the evening of July 22 while he was enroute home from Howard's Switch, where he had a been with a load of Stave Bolts. It was thought at first that life was hopeless but after a few days he improved and seemed to be on his way to recovery when he suddenly grew worse about two weeks before his death a gradually weakened away. The deceased is survived by his wife and seven children, two boys and five girls. The remains were laid to rest Friday evening at the Beatty Cemetery near his home on Trace Creek in the presence of a large number of friends.
