Thomas Shook BEATTY

Middle name from BP 2000 #162 [L162.GED] [aaa.ftw] [B-162.ftw] Captain Co., H. Jacob Biffle's 19th TN Cav., CSA. Mustered and known in the field as the 9th TN Cavalry.[Abraham.FTW] Thomas S. BEATTY was born in TN on Oct. 10, 1828. He was the son of James BEATTY and Francis PRIEST BEATTY. Thomas was a carpenter and farmer before the War Between the States broke out. In 1861 he enlisted in the 24th TN Infantry Regiment, CSA at Camp Trousdale. He was a 2nd Lt. in General Patrick Cleburne's command at Shiloh, saw General Albert Sidney Johnston killed and was himself wounded twice. When his ten month enlistment was up he headed home to form Company H of Jacob Biffle's 19th TN Cavalry Regiment, CSA and was elected it's captain. His brothers, Abraham, Hoyle, Joshua and Samuel served as privates under him. He served the remainder of the war in this unit and surrendered with General Nathan Bedford Forrest at Gainsville Alabama in May of 1865. On January 17, 1865, Thomas married Ann Virginia DAVIS, daughter of his 2nd Lt., Nicholas Sales DAVIS and sister of his brother Samuel's wife, Xantippa. After the war, Thomas and family lived with his brother, Samuel and family in Marshall County, TN. Samuel and his wife are buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Cornersville where they were reinterred from the Beatty Cemetery on the Vanhorn farm. Thomas died after 1900 and may still be buried in the cow field that was the Beatty Cemetery but no markers survive there. Paul Beatty, great, great grandson of Thomas S. Beatty Commander, John C.
