Sohn eines Soldaten, der schon 1833 stirbt; Realschule in Dresden, danach Kadettenanstalt in Berlin; seit 1859 Berufsoffizier; Teilnahme an zahlreichen Schlachten; Eisernes Kreuz 1. und 2. Klasse; 1866 Heirat mit Anna, 4 Kinder; 1878 Quittierung des Dienstes; 1878-1880 Einarbeitung in die Verwaltungslaufbahn in der Bürgermeisterei Xanten; 1880 Bewerbung um die Bürgermeisterei Andernach und/oder Unkel; ab 1880 kommissarischer, ab 1881 ordentlicher Bürgermeister von Unkel; als Protestant hatte er im katholischen Unkel v.a. Probleme, die Kirchenpolitik Preussens durchzusetzen; im Kulturkampf stieß er auf heftigen Widerstand durch prominente Bürger wie Matthias Kirchartz oder James Arthur von Bothwell; 1890 Ende der Amtszeit; seine Nachkommen leben bis heute in Unkel
