Marchio, Dux, Markgraf der Sorbenmark 892, Graf im bayrischen Nordgau 903, im Volkfeld 906; er spielte seit dem Aufstieg seines Bruders Heinrich in höchste Reichsämter eine entscheidende politische Rolle in Mainfranken und Thüringen und hatte unter den letzten Karolingern eine unangefochtene Stellung als Amtsherzog. Sein enges Bündnis mit Ott dem Erlauchten von Sachsen (Liudolfinger) führte zu einer festen Koalition vom Harz bis zum Main, die König Arnulf mit Hilfe der Konradiner aufzuspalten versuchte. Nur am Rande war er in den letzten Jahren in die "Babenberger Fehde" verwickelt und verlor zeitweise seine Stellung.
