Mary Katherine Westerkamp was born in Osterfeld, Germany, on February 9, 1912, to parents Wilhelm and Elisabeth (Ingendorn) Westerkamp.

Elisabeth Ingendorn Westerkamp died when Mary was very young. Unable to raise her himself, Wilhelm gave Mary to his eldest brother, Heinrich Westerkamp. Heinrich and his wife, Johanna, had two children of their own: Elisabeth and Herman. Mary was about 10 years younger than the other kids, but they loved her. Heinrich and Johanna raised Mary as their own for about the first two years of her life.

When Wilhelm remarried (Helen "Lena" Bresser), he came to take his child back. Apparently, it was a very emotional scene, and little Mary had to be pried from the hands of Johanna.

Wilhelm and Lena went on to have three boys together: Wilhelm, Josef, and Johannes.

In 1923, Wilhelm immigrated from Germany to Chicago. Two years later, Lena and the kids (including Mary) joined him in Chicago.

The family helped some of the other Westerkamps immigrate to Chicago. Heinrich and Johanna's oldest child, Elisabeth Westerkamp, was married to Wilhelm Altenkamp. Elisabeth was like an older sister to Mary. Her husband, Wilhelm Altenkamp, immigrated to the US in 1925 and stayed with Wilhelm and "Tante Lena" Westerkamp until he could afford to send the rest of his family over. They came in 1926, along with Elisabeth Westerkamp Altenkamp's brother, Herman Westerkamp. So, although Mary was only raised as siblings of Elisabeth and Herman for a couple years, they remained close family in Chicago.

On October, 30, 1933, Mary married Michael Schmitt. They had five children.

Mary Westerkamp Schmitt passed away in Wheaton, Illinois on May 20, 2006. She was 94 years old.
