853 Ship Mississippi Passenger Manifest
Louis Knabe, age 26, arrives at Port of Baltimore on September 14, 1853, two years and one week following the arrival of his parents and brother, Theodor. Louis is accompanied by his wife, Louisa, 26, and his brother, Gotlieb (Gottl.), 27, and his wife, Louisa, 24. They emigrated from "Grossenfurra" (Grossfurra) just like their family two years ago. Grossenfurra, as best I can discern, is just a smidge NW of a nearly precise midpoint between Frankfurt and Berllin. It lies just SW of Hannover. More research: Grossfurra lies4 miles NW of the larger town of Sondershausen along the River Wipper. It is in a very flat valley. It is 173 miles from Grossfurra to Bremen to the north by today's roads. The brothers' listed occupation is "carpenser".
1860 US Census
"Lewis", 30, lives in Cincinnati's 12th ward with his wife, Louisa, 30, and threedaughters: Alwyn, 7, Sophia, 4, and Louisa, 2. Alwyn was born in Prussia, indicating that she must have accompanied her parents to America when she was very young. Lewis is a carpenter. Under realestate value I discern the figure, $65.00. As they are in a building with three other families, including brother, Gotlieb, I presume that this figure represents monthly rent. "Gotlib", 34, is nextdoor with his wife, Louisa, 30. They have four children: Herman, 8, born, like his parents, in Saxon, Gustoph, 5, Lewis, 3, and Adam, 1/12, all born in the US. Gotlieb is also a carpenter. His family's rent is $60. The difference in European birth sites for Lewis and Gotlieb could lend a clue when searching German records. It might also simply result from different reporting from the two different households.
1870 US Census - Ward 18, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio
Louis, 40, works in a carprentry shop and lives with his brother, Gotlieb, 44, and Gotlieb's son, Herman, 18. All three live in a dwelling with three youngsters: Mary Schurter, 13, her apparent brother, Ernst, 4, and a domestic servant, Eliza Lautenschlager, 15. Do the elders act as parents to these children? No other parents seem to be in residence. So many mysteries surround the Knabes of 1870 - what happened to Louis's wife, Louisa. They seem to live two lives - one in Pikes Twp, Brown County, perhaps on a farm, the other in Cincinnati's 12th Ward. [copied from Louis' page]
1870 US Census Pike Twp., Brown Co.
Louisa, 40, lives in Pike Twp., Brown Co., (Feesburg PO) with some of her children except Herman and Gustoph. Herman lives with his father, Gottlieb, in Cincinnati where they work in a carpentry shop, along with Gottleib's brother, my ancestor, Louis. Children, Loui, 13, Adam, 10, and Joseph, 8, attend school. Edward, 6, Sophia, 5, and Lizzie, 2, are at home. Louisa's family lives next to Theodore, who is Gotlieb's eldest brother, and his family, including the patriarch, Henry, 76. Apparently the best source of revenue was for Gotleib and Louis to work in Cincinnati, along with Gotlieb's son, Herman. [copied from wife, Louisa's page]
1880 US Census, Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio
The entire family now lives together in Cincinnati on 46 Wilstack St. in what appears to be a multifamily dwelling. Gotleib is 54, Louisa 52 according to this census record. Louis, 23, is a house painter, Adam, 20, is a cigar maker, Joseph, 18,is a barber, Edward, 16, is a teamster. The rest of the children, Sophia, 14, Louisa, 11, Carrie, 9, Annie, 7, attended school the previous year. Sophia is listed "at home" while the others have "at school after their names. Perhaps Sophia has attended her final year in school.
Gotlib is listed in 1860 Federal census living next door to Louis
(spelled Lewis) and I have inferred from this that he is a brother. He may be a more distant relation, such as a cousin.
