Notes for this person
Newspaper article: A man found dead in a highway ditch between Nelliston and St. Johnsville this morning was believed to be Edward Bowman of Jersey City, NJ. Two of his brothers live in Utica. Believed to have been struck by a car operated by a hit and run driver while hitch-hiking to Utica to visit his brother Walter J. Bowman. Victim 58 years old had a cut on his head and bruises on his arms and hands. His clothes were torn and his false teeth were found lying near the body. Edward, who had been a frequent visitor to Utica, had sent his traveling bag to Utica after writing his brother that he would pay him a visit. The American Railway Express receipt for the bag was found in the man's pocket and this, with the fact that the man had false teeth and had planned to visit Utica, let Utica relatives to believe that he was Edward Bowman. He had been unemployed for several years. Relatives expected to view the body during the day to make certain about the identification. The body was discovered at 8:15 a.m. by Francis O'Brien, St. Johnsville, driver of an oil truck. He stopped and investigated when he saw a hat lying on the shoulder of the highway. The body lay in a pool of water in the ditch. O'Brien notified Sheriff Gerald Nellis, Fonda, who began an investigation. A piece of some sort of vehicle was found nearby and this with injuries suffered by the man led the authorities to believe that he was a victim of a hit and run driver. Coroner Clark Congdon of Fort Plain was notified and he ordered the body removed in the Graves funeral parlors in Fort Plain for an autopsy. Besides the brother mentions, Mr. Bowman is survived by three other brothers, George Bowman, Utica, Thomas, Jersey City, Noble, Albany. Also a sister Viola, Jersey City.
