GOTTFRIED [I] von Sponheim, son of MEGINHARD Graf von Sponheim & his wife Mechtild von Mörsperg (-after 1183).  According to Europäische Stammtafeln, Gottfried was the person referred to in the present document as "Gottfried [I] Graf von Sponheim" represents two different individuals both named Gottfried.  The primary source which confirms that this is correct has not yet been identified.  The birth of Graf Gottfried [I] can probably be dated to [1115], suggesting that he was a young adult when he succeeded his father. If that is correct, there would be no chronological difficulties with his being the same person who is named in the charter dated 1183, quoted below.  "…Godefridus comes de Spanheim…" witnessed the charter dated 1136 which records an agreement between the canons of Trier St Simon and Bamberg St Georg concerning tithes in Hönningen[154].  Graf von Sponheim.  The Annales Sancti Disibodi (Continuatio) name "…Godefridus de Spanheim…" among those present with the king when he celebrated Christmas at Worms in 1155[155].  "Conradus Palatinus comes de Reno" settled a dispute between the canons of Springirsbach and "Godefrido comite de Sponheim…et filiis suis" by charter dated 1183, witnessed by "Gerlaco comite de Veldenze, dominis Henrico, Simone, Ludovico de Spanhem…"[156].
