HANS OEHLERT, one of the successful agriculturists of JacksonTownship, residing on section 3, was born in Germany, March 6, 1834.His parents, Hans and Margaretha Oehlert, now deceased, never lefttheir native land. He was raised a practical farmer. December 21, 1860, he married Miss Magdalena Schmidt, who was born inGermany, February 1, 1841. Mr. Oehlert owned a home and was able tofarm his own land; but tales of free America with its grandopportunities for men of energy had reached him, and the hope ofbettering his condition (which hope has been fully realized) causedhim to leave the fatherland and sail for the United States. He landedat Castle Garden in June, 1870, and came directly to Iowa. For a while he worked at farm labor and on the railroad, but in thespring of 1871 settled on his present farm on section 3. He owns 160acres of the best land to be found in the township, all underimprovement. He has two children. His sons, Hans, married MattieBenick and lives in Jackson Township.His daughter, Maggie, and herhusband, James Woods, live with him. The family are worthy members ofthe Lutheran church. Mrs. Halling of Jackson Township is a sister ofMrs.Oehlert. In politics Mr. Oehlert is a Democrat. He is akind-hearted man, a good citizen, and is esteemed by all. Return To Message
