Copyright 1999, Thomas A. Stangl FOREWORD The Lutheran Confirmation records found in this document were extracted by myself in 1999, from microfilm [FHL #1196212] of the Church of Latter Day Saints [LDS], Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah. This film can be rented from local LDS Family History Centers, where they exist. There were two documents on this film which contained Registers of Lutheran Confirmations from the ILOW Parish, Duchy of Warsaw, Poland--AS 2140, 1806-1809 [pp 265-279]; and AS 2141, 1810-1814 [pp 266-286]. A total of 3,818 Confirmation Records were extracted from these two documents. A few of the Confirmants were of the Reformed Religion, and are so identified. Based on the handwriting on these records, it appears that they were recorded during 1806-1814, by a single Lutheran Pastor, Gottlieb Witthold, who was "Circuit-Riding" throughout the ILOW Parish, conducting Confirmation ceremonies at various villages/towns, most of which were German colonies. It is likely that local lay persons carried out the actual Confirmation instruction for the children prior to the arrival of the circuit-riding Pastor, who then performed the Confirmation ceremony. Each year, on Palm Sunday, a major Confirmation ceremony was conducted at ILOW. Most of the Confirmants at the ILOW ceremonies were from German colonies relatively close to ILOW, but occasionally some Confirmants came from colonies located at considerable distance from ILOW. The basic data found on the original [numbered] Pages of the German records were the following: Location [village/town/city], Year and Date of the Confirmation Ceremonies; First Name(s) and Surname of each Confirmant; and Resident Colony/Village of the Confirmant, if different than the Location. A few records also included the date of birth or age of the Confirmants [see Remarks]. Each Confirmant's record was given a Number, in sequence, by year. The locations of the Ceremonies were sometimes named by both their German and Polish names--e.g., the village of Erdmannsweiler/Kochanow. Where possible, I added data elements to each record as follows: name [German/Polish] of the Location of the Confirmation Ceremony as found on the A. Breyer Map [Loc-A Breyer Map]; name [German/Polish] of the Village on the A. Breyer Map [Vil-A Breyer Map]; and Remarks. The Remarks data element includes notes about where the Locations or Villages can be found in relation to larger cities [these notes are often included in the "Loc- & Vil-A Breyer Map" fields]; locations found only on the Karl Stumpp Map VIII; or locations found only on modern maps of Poland. In some cases, the listed Ceremony Locations and Villages could not be found on any map in my possession. However, I have been able to determine the general location of such Locations/Villages, and have indicated so in the Remarks. In addition, I have sometimes added notes about some confirmants, for whom I have found records in Bessarabia or Odessa. In general, the extraction of the names of the confirmants should be accurate, since most of these data were easy to decipher. However, surname spellings can vary, so be flexible when searching for a particular surname. The names of the Locations and Villages is another matter. Often these are Polish names and the scribe did not always use the same spelling from one group of records to another. In addition, the scribe often used abbreviations, which has made deciphering the resident village name problematical in some cases. DEDICATION The ILOW Parish Confirmations extraction work is dedicated to the memory of Philipp Jacob Seefried, great great grandfather of my wife, Janice Huber- Stangl. His confirmation record, along with his older brother, Georg Adam Seefried, is found in 1813, in Birkenfelde/Brzozow, located south of Rawa, Poland. It was the search for Philipp Jacob Seefried that led me to the ILOW film, to make the decision to extract the data, and to publish it for all who might be interested. Georg Adam and Philipp Jacob Seefried were born in Koenigsbach, Baden [in 1798 & 1799, respectively], and were brought to the German colony of Koenigsbach/Bukowiec, east of Lodz, Prussian Poland, in 1803- 1804, by their parents, Jacob Friedrich Seefried [born 1768, Koenigsbach, Baden] and his wife, Eva Barbara Huft [born 1771, OberWoessingen, Baden]. A sister, Anna Maria Seefried, was born shortly after the family's arrival in Prussian Poland. By 1812, the Seefried family was living in Erdmannsweiler/Kochanow, where a brother, Andreas Seefried, was born. After the brief stay in Birkenfelde/Brzozow in 1813, the family joined the emigration of German colonists to Bessarabia--first to Alt Elft, then to Neu Elft in 1827, where my wife's great grandfather, Jacob Seefried, was born in 1843.
