Peter Ackermann was born in Rohrbach, South Russia, the son of Johannes and Christina (Hildenbrandt) Ackermann, December 15, 1875. His early boyhood was spent in Rohrbach, where heattended school studying in both the German and Russian languages.When he was fourteen years old he accompanied his parents to America and settled with them on their homestead.
When the workon the farm was finished, he would work for neighbors, to increase the family income. Food was scarce at that time, especially meat. In the winter time, fish were speared out of Red Lake and rabbitswere snared. In the summer, wildducks could be shot for food.
On March 21, 1896, Peter Ackermann was married to Katherina Krein, the daughter of Christian and Magdalina (Schauer) Krein. They began farming for themselves. Their nearest market was Ashley, ND. In 1898 the railroad was extended from Kulm and entered what is now Wishek. Wishek's first business was carried on in a tent atthat time. Mr. Ackermann rode on the first excursion train over the railroad line to Bismarck.
In 1905 the family moved to Wishek. Mr. Ackermann going into the machine business. Later heoperated the livery barn. This he sold and then purchased, with Mr. Henry Wolfe, a general merchandise store. This was the beginning of his years in Wishek as a merchant. With various partners he remained in the general merchandise business until 1936, when he retired and moved to Lodi, California, where he and Mrs. Ackermann still reside. (1948)
They are the parents of six children,four of which reached adulthood. They are John Ackermann, Wishek, Mrs. Lydia Ackermann-Ritter, Stockton, CA.; Mrs. Martha Ackermann-Anderson, Lodi, CA.; and Edwin Ackermann, San Francisco, CA.
