A History of Rural Clay County, MN, 1976 FERDINAND BUTENHOFF FAMILY Ferdinand was born in Franklin County, Iowa to August and Willamenia Tievs Butenhoff. He came to Baker at the age of seventeen, purchasing his farm in 1913. He was married to Emma Stock, daughter of Adam and Emilia Stock of Farmington township, Albany, Mn. In 1917 Traveling at this time was mostly by train if you were going any distance. During the years before the land was all turned much of it was used as pasture and hay land for sheep and cattle. Horses were used for field work; Ferdinand owned and operated a threshing rig. They moved around to about a half dozen farms during harvesting. Livestock, milking, chores, poultry, large gardens kept everybody busy. Usually there were several hired hands and at times a school teacher living with the family. A school was moved into this area in about 1925 - Dist. 114W. One teacher taught all eight grades and was also janitor. Church for the family was at Trinity Lutheran of Sabin, Mn. In early years, many times the distance of nine miles was covered by horse and buggy or in the winter time by sled. Children in the family" Mathilda - Mrs. Lester Possehl - living in Alliance township. Irene - died at the age of sixteen while a senior in High School. Arnold - owns and operates home farm in Alliance Township Cecelia - Mrs. Desmonde Jerde - teachesHome Ec. In Britton, S.D. LaVerne - died at the age of nineteen. Avis - Living in Moorhead, Mn. Works in Federal Civil Service in Fargo, N.D. Laurence - married to Beverly Johnk. He farms in Alliance Township. This farm was first sold along with other lands by President Wm.McKinley to the Northern Pacific Railroad Co. After owning the land for sometime they sold it to the St. Paul, Minneapolisand Manitoba Railroad Co. This company sold the land to John Erickson and Lew Huntoon in 1896 and since hen the land has been owned by private parties. Ferdinand Butenhoff purchased the farm in 1913 from Hattie M. Graves and Clem Graves. Ferdinand G. Butenhoff, 73, who farmed four miles south of Baker, [Minnesota] will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Sabin, of which he was a member. The Rev. Im. W. Bade will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call Friday afternoon and evening at Wright Chapel. Mr. Butenhoff died Wednesday evening in a local hospital, where he had been a patient about three weeks. Born in Franklin County, Iowa, Sept. 9, 1883, he came to Clay County at the age of 17, to the home of his sister, Mrs. Henry Possehl. He married Elma Stock at Albany, March 20, 1917, and they had celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this spring. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Arnold and Laurence, ruralBaker: three daughters, Mrs. Lester (Mathilda) Possehl, rural Baker, Mrs. Desmond (Delia) Jerde, Britton S.D., and Avis Butenhoff, Tokyo, Japan, who is presently home on emergency leave. He also leaves three sisters, Mrs. Rose Possehl, 1608 4th Ave. S., Mrs. T.E. Iverson, 503 8th Ave. S., and Mrs. O. M. Iverson of Baker; two brothers, W. J. Butenhoff of Barnesville and Otto, Lancaster, Calif., and10 grandchildren. A daughter, a son, three brothers, and a sister preceded him in death.
