Rita F. Durner, beloved and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Rita was born to the late Margaret and Joseph Fischer in Princeton, New Jersey, on October 17, 1930. She grew up on her parents’ farm in Cranbury, New Jersey. Her upbringing on the family farm allowed Rita to develop and nurture a knowledge and appreciation of growing vegetables and flowers. Throughout her life Rita always had flower gardens that brought color and life when spring was still early. She was especially fond of crocuses, daffodils, lilies, peonies, and tulips. Rita attended Cranbury Elementary School and Hightstown High School (Class of 1948).
Rita and Edward Francis Durner married on February 5, 1955. They built their home and raised 8 children on an acre of land next door to the house that Rita grew up in. The proximity of Rita and Edward’s home to her parents provided a strong foundation of family values that they passed on to her children. The Fischer farm was a focal point for Sunday and holiday family gatherings. After the passing of Rita’s parents, and the growth of her children’s families, Rita and Edward’s home became the focal location for many happy occasions.
Rita was employed by Allen and Stults Insurance Co. in Hightstown, Hagarty’s Florist in Cranbury, and retired from McGraw-Hill Publishing Co. in Hightstown after 25 years of service. After retirement, Rita work part-time for 15 years with Ceridian Co. in Plainsboro. Throughout her life she was a devote parishioner of Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Hightstown. She was an active member of the Church’s choir for many years, and it was a joy and a privilege for her to have been part of the choir’s pilgrimage to Rome to sing for Pope John Paul II in 1996.
Rita’s other interests, besides gardening, included reading, crossword puzzles, listening to music, and watching Jeopardy. Rita loved the beaches of Manasquan and Island Beach State Park, where she would take her children to play in the sand and surf while she relaxed and watched from her beach chair.
Rita instilled on her children a strong work ethic, an appreciation of beauty, and a love of family. She leaves her husband and children with love and many wonderful memories. We are blessed to have had Rita in our lives and will dearly miss her.
Besides her parents, her brother Joseph Fischer predeceased Rita. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Edward, children Kathleen (Robert) Copeland, Joan (Wayne) Wittman, George and girlfriend Lia, Edward (Annette) Durner, Karen (John) DelleFave, Mary (Paul) Nolan, Jack and girlfriend Kanako, and Allison. Rita is survived by grandchildren Christian, Halle, Bryan, Christopher, Chelsea, Eddie, Adam, Amanda, Ashley, Dylan, and Mia; and great-grand daughters Gianna, Ava and Krista. She is survived by her sisters Margaret Koury, Blanche Hallock, Annette (Richard) Murphy, brother George Fischer, and sister-in-law Jean Fischer. She leaves behind several cousins, many nieces and nephews, as well as friends from her choir, McGraw-Hill and Ceridian. Rita especially valued the friendship of Pia and Quinton.
The Durner family wishes to express their gratitude to Dr. Richard Lee and the staff at Princeton Medical Group, her aids Chandra Sookhu and Laurel Washington, and nurse Susan Sienkiewicz from Princeton Homecare. Their professionalism and compassion help Rita to spend her last days in comfort and dignity.
Friends and relatives are invited to her viewing on Monday 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the St. Anthony of Padua Church, 251 Franklin Street, Hightstown, NJ. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at 10:30am at the St Anthony of Padua Church. Burial will follow in the Westminster Cemetery, Cranbury, NJ. Arrangements are under the direction of the Barlow & Zimmer Funeral Home, Hightstown.
In lieu of flowers, the Durner family asks that donations be made to the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (www.ocrf.org), the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org), or T.E.A.L .(www.tealwalk.org).
